Poidog's 70g Tech Tank Build

Nope, never had one before and it's completely submerged. Why would that happen? it's just water flowing into water vs water falling into water

Thats what I thought too. However even partially submerged causes back pressure, which causes overflows on these models. I didnt believe it either until I cleaned up the mess for a third time on my XP 2000. You can search my post for the fix and splash elimination when the outlet is above water. Once you fix these issues it is a really good performing skimmer.

So the manufacture recomends 5.5" deep, I have it at 8 now. Even at 5.5" the gate valve is fully submerged. I looked at other SRO skimmers and the output faces horizontally and there is the fix to make it exit down. On my model the output is already facing downwards.

You really need to get that thing in the right amount of water or you will NEVER be able to dial it in once the break in is over. I spoke with Jeremy at Coralvue (Octopus) about this when I was going to use an SRO skimmer. He said that performance will be seriously hindered if the output is even partially submerged.

Looks like an egg crate platform is in your future!

Okay, since i've been through a cycle only once before, and three years ago, I've got a question.
My readings are at:
Ammonia 1.0
Nitrite 1.0
Nitrate 10

Since I have Nitrite and Nitrate readings is there nitrifying bacteria present in my system? I added 80 lbs of dry rock, 40 lbs of dry sand, and only 10 lbs of "live" sand. was that sand really so super live to just start a cycle in 3 days? I was thinking of adding a bottle of bio-spira to help add to the amount of bacteria in my system as well since I started out with mostly all "dry" components.

no, pump intake and exit are at the same level.

Hm, I would contact CoralVue and ask them for a definitive answer. They seem to be very consistent on the fact that the output should not be submerged at all. Either way the tank looks great and it looks like your cycle is well under way! Come over and get that rock tomorrow!

Already did. They said 5.5-6" depth on this one.

Will do, how about next weekend?

Subscribed to this thread! I've always loved your nanocube - I think its one of the few nano tanks out there which have excellent SPS coral colour, so I can only imagine that this tank is going to be something special.

Look forward to seeing this tank develope. :inlove:

Thanks Sahin! Be careful with those riots over in London. I have a few friends over there and they say they're pretty scary.

So I'm starting to work on a fish stock list. Any suggestions?
So far I'm thinking:
Ocellaris Clown pair
Bluespot jawfish
McCosker's flasher wrasse
Trio of Chromis
pair of ORA blue mandarins

A fuzzy dwarf lionfish! :D

Are you planning on having an anemone for the clowns or do you not want to risk one with your SPS?

Cycle update:
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 5.0
Nitrate 20

I wonder if it's stalling on the nitrite side. If there is no movement by the end of the week, then that's what's happening and I'll have to do something to jump start it.

I'm thinking of a Choati Wrasse once the tank is established.
