Poidog's 70g Tech Tank Build

Cycle update:
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 5.0
Nitrate 20

I wonder if it's stalling on the nitrite side. If there is no movement by the end of the week, then that's what's happening and I'll have to do something to jump start it.

I'm thinking of a Choati Wrasse once the tank is established.

It usually takes some time to grow microbacter neceaasary to take the nitrite level down to 0. If you dont want to wait, i can recommend Niteout. Two days tops.

I'm thinking of picking up a small bottle of bio-spira to add to the tank... I can pick that up at petco and don't need to order it in like dr. tims. I'll take a look at the niteout too.

Looks like your cycle is slowly progressing....dont rush it. Its a slow process. I think my cycle took about 3 weeks to show no ammonia and nitrite. Let me know when you are ready for the macro......

Agreed... I've had success in this hobby for 3+ years now. The only reason I bring it up is because I had started with dry-rock. That is why I'm thinking that a proven bacteria additive may benefit.

I used Niteout and it worked wonderfully. Some people use Bacter7 and that would do the trick as well. As long as your skimmer is working well, there is very little downside to using bacteria additives.

So I went to petco today and got a small bottle of bio-spira (rated up to 30g). Since I'm not using it to add fish right away but to help sdd to the bacteria currently cycling I didn't think I would need two bottles rated for 60g. I also ghost fed some rods food since my ammonia has been at 0 for a while to feed that bacteria. I'll test on wendsday to see if it's had any effect on my nitrite levels.

I ended up returning the Sicce 3.0 return pump. The thing was very loud and the vibration noise was ridcous for a pump that has "silent" in it's name. It was no were near silent. I replaced it with a Marineland 3000 utility pump (which ironically is also made by Sicce). The thing is almost silent. No vibration or excess noise, just motor hum. It was rated higher gph than the Sicce, but the Sicce actually had more flow. I'm now pushing about 300-400 gph through my sump (instead of the 700-800 of pump advertised less head loss).

Hey,

I've been following your build mainly because Im building a 75 gallon so it's pretty similar. Is it out of the norm for my cycle to be over already? My tank was finally filled fully this past friday... My ammonia is already at 0ppm and nitrate is at 5ppm. I had about 40 lbs of live sand and about 50 gallons of the water was kept in large bins outside with LR rubble and powerheads. Could that explain why I had next to no cycle?

Yup, that's nomal. The last 5 tanks I've built with LR/LS all cycled in 4 days or less.

ahh ok, thanks! When i read your postings i was like, uh oh... what if i didn't even give the tank time to even start the cycle.

Readings still the same... these nitrites hanging out at over 5ppm for over a week now is driving me crazy. 0 on the phosphate test, so no leeching from the dry rock.

Why couldn't this tank be ready last month! Divers Den has gotten in some of the "prized" specimens that I wanted for this tank recently, and I can't get them! ahhhhh driving me crazy.
