Awhile back someone posted that they had polished a scratched acrylic tank. I looked, but cant find the post. Does anyone know who posted it? Has anyone here polished a tank with really fine sandpaper? Where did you buy it?
Thanks

do not use sandpaper!
any plastics dealer sells acrylic polish in different grades, depending on the depth of the scratch.
try yellowbook or your local yellow pages for a dealer near you, its about $7.00 a bottle.
if you still cant find it, try www.mscdirect.com i know for a fact they have it.
they also sell green, blue , black, yellow, red, and clear acrylic sheets.

I've used Novus plastic polish on all kinds of acrylic/plastic. Also works great on scratched CDs and DVDs.http://www.novuspolish.com/

I get it through the company I work for, but you should be able to get it at most plastic wholesaler, West Marine used to carry it, not sure about now. Prospect Plastics should have it.

rrefnetworth - I have read about others using sandpaper with a grit of around 1200 - 2000 for deeper scratches.

spookey208 - there were no products at the link and I searches for acrylic polish there and nothing came up

RedDmon - we have something like this from BOW - Boat Owners Warehouse for the final polishing

The kit has 1500,1800,2400,3200,3600,4000,6000,8000 & 1200 grit micromesh each piece about 6"square. It also comes with a full bottle of ant-static cream.
Jewelers rouge and a buffing wheel on a high speed drill does a great job polishing out scratches that aren't too deep.

******* transformation.

42un81,
Yours was the post that I was thinking about. Didn't realize that it has been that long. Where did you get the kit? Did you order it or get it locally? I was hoping to find one locally.
Thanks,
Renee

buffing

buffing

Renee, I used to buff out alot of acrylic tanks. You can use sandpaper but make sure you go to a car paint place and get the wet sandpaper. It depends on how deep the scratches are as to what grit you will need to start out with. If scratches are really deep you may have to start out with 800 if they are not you can probably start with 1200. Make sure you keep paper flat when sanding to avoid dimples, we use to use a buffing wheel and an adhesive that would make the sandpaper stick to the wheel. After sanding with 800, step up to 1200, than 1500, than 2000. When you are done with the 2000 you than need to buff the tank with the novus acrylic polish to resore the lustre. Any questions let me know.

LarryV,
Thanks for the info.
I just picked up a "project tank", 210 acrylic with deep scratches. I am sure that I can not polish this one by hand. Could I use an iar tool like a jitterbug 1/4 sheet sander or a DA? Should the tool provide orbital or random sanding patterns? Which number Novus acrylic polish did you use after the 2000 grit wet dry? Thank you

Air compressor tools work great. We used an orbital disc sander. Use the novus 2 after the 2000 grit, the 1 is more of a cleaner.
We did my buddies 400 and it came out great.
