Poly Filter color...unsure.

Hello guys,
I've had a couple of weird deaths in my tank over the last 2-3 weeks and since I have no indication of anything wrong with the water I decided to give Poly Filer a try to search for metal traces.
I placed it 5 days ago in the tank right on top of the filter socks to have as much water as possible go through it.
Today it is almost completely covered in a brown-ish color, same color of the stuff my filter socks catch all the time.
It is very close to the "brown" color the Poly Filter is supposed to take indicating the presence of Iron so I am a bit confused. Can anyone who have used it help me identify if the color is normal or not?
Thank you!

Look at the sticky ^^^ on parameters and see if that's a problem. And consider that deaths can be due to a lack of something as well as the presence of something. Stray voltage is another possibility (cracked heater case)...or oxygenation.
