Poo? Really. POO?! Where did this theory start? I'm calling Shenanigans!

After my effort to say poo isn't bad for the corals, I sat in a lecture with (Copps) and have reversed my opinion. I have way too much detritus in my tank and have begun a diligent effort to remove any and all detritus, sump included.

He said, if you ask all the long term successful SPS reefers how they have succeeded, a commonality between them would be "remove detritus".

Oh yeah, detritus definitely has to go, I don't want that stuff just laying around stagnant. I baste my rocks and sump weekly with a filter sock in place and my powerheads on full blast constant mode. You would be surprised how much accumulates in just a week.

i think settled detrius is the reason why my phosphates keep reading at .08. i have a maxi jet in the sump and detrius still settles in certain spots. This is a great thread.

I read the 1st page and last 2-pages. Looks like for your size tank and skimmer you need more fish to get that thing working properly, or coral food. Fish would be more fun though.

I think that's the conclusion. However, I have seen countless examples of people with only LR or a lot less bio-load with this particular skimmer with incredible skimmate production. The ATB skimmer club thread has lots of such cases. I am up to 10 fish and a few acro colonies now; the skimmer still hasn't produce a single drop of skimmate in roughly 3 days. It does have some build up in the neck.

I haven't sell or throw away this skimmer primary because my corals aren't browning or I am having algae issue. I guess we will see as I continue to feed more. I am dosing Roti Feast nightly now.

just a thought on the skimmer, are you running an ATO in the sump? Most skimmers need a stable water level in the sump in order to skim, unless you want to constantly adjust the valve on the skimmer.

My Naso just took a "poo" in the tank. It was large enough to cloud my view of the tank. Normally I'd be proud of him, but should I worry? j/k
