Poor Decision

Over the weekend I made purchased a sabae anemone without researching it :headwally: My wife liked it and the LFS said I had appropriate lighting. After researching them, I found out I don't have correct lighting and it shouldnt be white. It appears to be fine, but looks like they can "survive" for awhile in under conditions. I am debating on upgrading my lighting to LED's in order to correct it. I use RODI water, and only have a few fish so water parameters are usually good. My sg tends to creep up on me due to evaporation. However within the past two months I got a refractometer and been keeping it under better control. I have a 75 gallon tank with 4 65w pc bulbs. I just replaced them with 2 10k and 2 03 antic bulbs.

I never used PC's and so I can't comment on the lighting. I will say though that you can reverse the bleaching of the nem with good lighting and some feeding.

I have had a couple of sebae anemones over the years that I bought that were bleached (not quite as much as yours) and they had recovered and wer/are healthy.

Why do you want to go with LED's? Get a good T5 fixture.

I thought t5's were on par with pc. That is why I was thinking the next step would be mh or led. I would love it though if my current lighting was adequate. What did you feed your anemone? I was feeding silversides to a LTA, but a fellow member advised against them. Right now I have been making sure it gets rod's reef when feeding the fish.

PC is not on par with T5's. Also some T5's are better than others.

I know people use LED's for nem's but I think it is simpler not using LED's (no guessing at colors, % of light output to use). I know this is a touchy subject but T5 is plug and play.

I feed raw shrimp from my supermarket. I buy it fresh, cut it up, and freeze it. I also heard not to feed Silversides as well.

Ive kept nems under LED's, Malu, BTA etc. I wouldnt hesitate to use LED. Once caution though, make sure its dimmable. The white light is so strong it has been known to bleach nems/corals.
 
So is it known that my lighting won't sustain the anemone? Or can I wait and see how it does? Anything in particular to watch out for? It hasn't moved from the original location and still is about 9" across. I have to go to the store today so I will pick up some shrimp today. Assuming thawed raw chucks, how large and how often? About 1/4inch cubes twice weekly?

As far as the t5 lighting, something like this would be better than LED?

That nem could come back to health, and if it's foot has set it has a pretty good chance.
T5's are much better than PC's, and that would be my choice.
That nem is a sand dwellar, so you need light that penetrates at depth, so I would choose T5's over LEDs in this case.
I would look at the TEK lights over what you posted, ATI would be even better.
That nem being a sebae(H. crispa) will handle all the light you can throw at it, they are very light needy.
 
this is the perfect oppurtunity to get the wifes permission to spend big on an LED upgrade imo, she liked it so much and if she doesnt want it to do you'll need to hang 2 ecotech leds now ;-)
 
I don't have exp w/ the ecotechs, but I know the ecoxotic panorama wasn't strong enough to penetrate for my Malu at bottom, and crispa is much more light needy.
 
The foot is visible from under the tank, so hopefully that is a good sign. I tried giving it some shrimp tonight, but it hasn't done anything with it yet (just in its tentacles). The more I am reading about this the more discouraged I am getting. Seems like this is a lot harder of an anemone to keep than a LTA.
 
I looked at the ATI fixtures. The only difference between the sunpower and powermodule is they are dimmable and the reflectors are shaped slightly different, correct?
 
I have a sebae that is almost 2 years old. It arrived bleached just like yours and I was able to nurse it back to health. I don't feed it though. It is in a 55 gallon with 2 X 250 watt MH and 4X96 watt PC. This nem is awesome. It settled in front and center of my tank just where I wanted it to.
 
I wouldn't get discouraged, and actually I think Crispa's are one of the easiest to keep, they are extremely hearty compared to most.
They just need a little more grow room and fairly strong light.
I have the sunpower myself, and it is a kick butt fixture, it would be plenty.
Dimmable is nice, but not a must have by any means, that is a fairly new option.
 
Don't get discouraged. Get the T5 fixture and the nem will come back. If you can spend the money on an ATI fixture, you can't go wrong. You can keep an SPS with this as well.

I have the 6 bulb Powermodule on my tank and I have problems acclimating SPS at the bottom of my tank. Tank is 24" deep. Probably could have gone with the 4 bulb unit.

Btw, my Crispa is on a rock about 10" from the water surface.
