Porquipine Puffer

Please tell me that these guys will puff up every once in a blue moon for no apparent reason. I've had an absolute perfect little guy for about 6 months now. He has such the personality. He always comes to the glass to see what I'm doing.

None of the fish in this FO tank bother one another. I've seen him puff up twice and then deflates and greets me at the tank.

Any clues?

My porc does it once in awhile too, its almost always at night. We never are able to catch a pic of it, we never seem to have the camera ready quick enough, he deflates as soon as he see that we see him. My husband and I really want to catch a pic. Someones avatar is a porc when he is puffed. Although I some one say that it isn't good for them, if someone can chime in on that?'

I also love this fish, he swims to the glass and always hangs out where he can see us. I wave to him and my husband thinks i am crazy! ;)

also forgot too add, he doesn't bother a sole he is a very docile porc. He doesn't try to eat our snails, we are even considering adding some crustaceans or starfish

its normal my porc and my stars/stripes both do it once in a while, while it is not good for them to do it they do it unprovoked to 'exercise" the muscles needed to puff up when they need to for defense

You guys are NOT going to believe this, but as we are sitting here watching tv, my husband says LOOK LOOK THE PUFFER! He was puffed and we got it on my new EVO which I have only had a week and can't figure out how to get the @#^& pic on the computer...... hold on we think we can

Would be better pics if we weren't so excited! Here he is. BTW he is the only fish in the tank that has a name "Spike" ( i know real original LOL)

Mine does the same thing. Will be puffed up when I enter the room, see me, immediately deflate and start begging.

My dog, puffer, and lionfish are all named Spike. Not to be confused with Steve the Bluethroat.

The only puffing up would be a problem is when it's a stress response. It's not the physical act of puffing that is the problem, but the stress causing the fish to puff. Unprovoked puffing that is done "just because" is neither stressful or problematic ;)
