Possible gigantea!

I may be picking up this gigantea a little later this week. The lfs owner took a picture of it for me, from what i have heard its alot brighter color than the picture actually shows. He has had it since the 12th, and it has been eating mysis. The drive is an hour from here and im just deciding now if i want to risk it, i know from the picture it looks really good and the guy that looked at it says the mouth is closed tight and its fully inflated all the time...I made room for it in the 60, just don't want to waste 75$ on something again. It looks like gigantea to you guys right? From this picture. I know its not great.

Looks like a gigantea to me. I like the long thin tentacles. That is one sign of a healthy gigantea.
 
Take the chance at 75 dollars its a great buy. And chances are it will do great because it looks great, good luck.
 
Yep, gigantea. I'd jump on it (and heck some of my LOCAL LFS's are a 1 hour drive!). Good luck and keep us posted.
 
Do any of you have experience with a gigantea and magnifica in the same aquarium? its a 60g cubish tank with about 85 total gallons. I dont remember reading anyone having these two together and wondering if its just because of its hard to get two healthy or someone has experience with chemical warfare between the two. The 60 is has a rock tower towards the right where the magnifica will be moved to sometime or another, when i feel like moving him. He is fine where he is currently. And the bottom half to the left is where i would put the gigantea, i don't have to move the magnifica there, but i think it would be quite a site with both of those anemone with a pair of onyx perc's or black occ's. Thoughts?
 
I don't have anything but bad experiences with giganteas (0 for 2 with them :(), (but I do have a nice healthy magnifica ;))
I think that most here will probably tell you that your tank is a bit too small to house both a magnifica and a gigantea, both of which get very large. Your total water volume may also be a hinderance in terms of the stability needed for these guys singly, let alone both of them in the same tank.
Should you try it, I hope it works well for you!
 
The only time I observed what I speculate was chemical warfare between anemones was with BTA's and my magnifica, and it only became a problem if my BTA's would "clone up" to about 3 in number, and suddenly the magnifica would not do as well.

I keep my magnifica on its own system these days, because of this, and also because of its impossibly large size.

I would have to agree that a 60gal cube is likely not going to house both species indefinitely.

I have two gigantea's right now and I noticed that their growth rate is slightly exponential in nature, in that the first two years they didn't grow so much, but all of a sudden the growth rate has taken off.

But initially I don't see why it couldn't work. The two species inhabit different zones in the reef so if all else is well there should be basically no interaction.

The only thing is I don't think it would be a very natural display since the species really don't occupy the same reef zone.
 
I have a 180ish size cube in my head that is going to be happening in the next year or two, so size isn't my problem for upgrading...Do you really think 80g is two small for stability problems? I have maintained a 29g with perfect parameters for 5 yrs, which has successfully housed a number of anemones including clones and anemones exhibiting mating behavior, clouding the tank, etc. It does take Extreme watchfulness etc but its doable ime and imo. Its not for everyone and definitely not for anyone with the hint of laziness.
All that said, I will be picking up the anemone later this week.
 
It is definately doable in a 80 gallon especially if you have proved that you can succcessfully maintain it. However, just for safety, I would upgrade so you can have a higher carrying capacity and even more stability. Can't go wrong there. ;)
 
If the anemone is healthy, you should have no problems short term in your tank.

That's a pretty big "if", because seemingly healthy specimens may have internal infections that aren't evident for weeks/months.

Wow, amazing find! I would not put it in a tank with another anemone though. I tried it with a giga and a haddoni and the giga lost BIG TIME. Where did you find this, if you don't mind me asking? I would love to contact them and order another one for myself. If you PM me the name/phone number of the place, I will be quite greatful to you (and I swear I will not buy this one from under you unless you officially decide to pass on it). Just letting you guys know, i passed on the gigantea for a purple mertensii. Will post a new thread in a couple minutes with info on it.
40$ too, talk about a steal.
