Possibly Stupid Impulse Purchase

I was at a LFS yesterday two hours away from home and against my better judgement listened to the stores advice which I know is a rookie mistake without knowing for sure if they are correct or not... Anyway I purchased a beautiful Desjardini Sailfin Tang which was according to the store only supposed to get to 5-6" and be perfectly peaceful with other tangs.

After getting home and doing some reading now I find it is a much larger fish and is aggressive towards other Zebrasoma classified tangs. I also have a Scopas in my 140 Tall which is a 48" tank, so I am wondering what the groups collective though is on this.

Obviously I am worried about the length that these two can grow to and the aggressiveness towards each other. Did I screw up as bad as I am reading?

I am sorry to say, you might have made a mistake. They get HUGE and a 48" will not last them long. I also think you will see some agression issues.

Another good reason not to listen to most employees at a LFS. They are only there to sell stuff and make money.

Ok since there isn't any positive encouragement in the reply's so far. I am agreeing that I screwed up... I had a strong feeling that I did.

I have left a message with the owner of the LFS to see what we can do. Hopefully we can work something out.

I'd bring it back and ask for a refund. Not a good choice for the tank with another Zebrasoma in it. A nice fish, though.

There are some really excellent local fish stores; this might even be one of them. But you got bad advice here, especially with another zebrasoma in the tank.

I couldn't agree more, and yes this is supposed to be one of the best LFS in the area. Bad advice or not though, the responsibility lies with me. I made an impulse purchase when I knew I shouldn't have.

Well, I am not sure I would lay the whole problem in your lap. In theory a LFS provides added value with advice to justify in part their pricing. But I certainly would have a discussion with them about their role.

Agree with Steve. They should help you remedy the problem- if not, let them know politely that they have lost a customer for life, and begin establishing a relationship with another store. Also, keep in mind your role in this event- I tend to listen to what the guys at the LFS have to say, and then to my own research for confirmation (or correction!).

I spoke to the owner of the store yesterday. I will be returning him today. They were understanding as a good LFS should be in this situation.

Thanks for all of the feedback...

Thanks techreef... I returned it yesterday and all is well in the soap opera that we call reef keeping. The shop didn't fully understand my concerns, but then again it was also the original guy that I purchased it from. I will know where he stands in the overall education level in the future.
