Thanks. I just added 3-4 inches of sand so I could get a blue spotted jawfish, so it looks completely different. I think I need more live rock now.

i'd let the rest fill in with coral. If you take up too much of the tank space with rock, you'd be suprised at how fast it seems full.

Yeah that's a good point. Does the live rock still do it's job if it's buried in sand?

No. Live rock works on the principle that it is a host for beneficial aerobic (oxygen breathing) bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate, which either presents itself in the water column, is absorbed by coral, is skimmed out as skimmate, or off-gasses as Nitrogen (in a DSB). If it's buried under sand, you get anaerobic bacteria that don't serve the same purpose. They will however, function as a part of the deep sand bed, and part of what those bacteria do is convert nitrate into nitrogen.
