Post mating: Horn Shark

Hello all. I am hoping some of the shark breeders on this forum can help me out. My horn sharks mated, which is great. However, the female has decided that she doesn't want to eat. So, I am a little concerned to say the least. Is this normal for sharks which have just mated? She hasn't eaten for 4 days. I should note the prior 3 feedings were large.

im not sure how many breeders we have here have you looked on shark ray central they have a good breeding forum you could prob find the info you need just by reading through it

I posted on that forum, thanks. What about folks who have bred other sharks? Have you notice changes in diet right after mating?

I haven't bred sharks (yet :D) but I'm pretty sure this is a normal process. I wouldn't be surprised is she starts eating within a few days.

Clasper, I don't have any experience with breeding Horn's, but with my eppies, there was not any change in diet after breeding. My female stops eating the last few days before she lays a round of eggs, but not when they are breeding. How violent were your sharks? I imagine that it could be pretty stressful depending on how aggressive your male is. Mine are pretty gentle, although it is still pretty wild watching the male take the female's entire pectoral fin into his mouth.

For a well fed shark, she should be able to go a couple of weeks easy without eating. It might just take her a little while to settle down.

The more I think about it, though, my male did go off feed for five or six days after they first started breeding. I had made some other changes to the tank around the same time, and wasn't sure if the fasting was related to the breeding or not.

Thanks for the reply. It wasn't too rough, but her cloaca looks pretty red. I didn't try feeding last night, but I am going to try tonight with some garlic. It has been a week since she last ate. My bamboo eats like crazy when she is laying eggs. Amazing how different each specie is.

Thanks. I spoke with some folks at several public aquariums who basically all said this is not uncommon and not to worry until 2 weeks. So, I'll hold tight. She seemed more active last night- hopefully we are on the upward trend.
