Hello All!

I purchased a Potter Angel on Sunday night and placed him in my QT tank. I normally dont have live rocks in there but I put one in there for him to hide. It hides pretty much all day however he is not eating.

Its been about 2 days and I feed 2 times a day but have yet to witness it eat anything.

Is this normal behavior? Should I be worried or is it too soon to tell?

Thank you!

They're problematic and often don't eat. I have one in QT that hasn't eaten anything in over a week. May have to move it to my coral QT that has live rock.

They are pretty stubborn when it comes to eating. What foods have you tried? I am 1 out of 3 with Potters. The 1 that I had was eating at the LFS. So I saw him eat. Had to get rid of it as it started nipping at my corals. The other 2 were from LA and lasted about a month.

A big part of their diet is the various micro algaes that cover most things in the aquarium and without that present its hard to ween them onto prepared foods unless they're already eating prepared foods when you get them. Like the other folks said, their biggest bugaboos are getting them to eat in captivity, so you did the right thing by putting a live rock in the QT in the hopes that it will start to nibble at that and give it enough time to recognize other prepared offerings as a food source. Good luck as these are wonderful little angelfish.

Mine has never eaten anything I've fed to it- live white or black worms, various frozen foods, fresh clams, algae clips, even rubbing masstick into oyster shells.

It does graze constantly on microalgae on the rock. Its a mature 200, so he is staying fat so far.

I put it directly into the DT; didn't think it would survive quarantine.

I never have problems with them. Have had probably 10 or so and each one eat immediately. But I get mine from a great source and they never hit wholesale waters which I believe is important for finicky eaters.

The African flame backs are a nice alternative. I have had quite a lot of success with them in the past . Looking for some right now

I have personally owned two potters angels and have worked on an aquarium that had two. My first one live for two years until it jumped out of the aquarium, and he was my smallest potters at purchase. The larger one lasted close to what albano stated around the six month mark. The two in the aquarium that I serviced was a mature three hundred and fifty gallon, with about two hundred and fifty pounds of live rock. Both did great for about three years until the tank was torn down, then one got a bacterial infection in its mouth. All four of angels were introduced directly into the display, and then started eating frozen within the first couple months.

Unfortunately, even if they do eat, they often die a few months later for no apparent reason.

Yup. Had two on separate occasions that both ate immediately, but mysteriously died around the six month mark. Looked and acted healthy before dying with no signs of disease and all the other fish were fine.

I think it's the most beautiful of the affordable dwarf angels, but too finicky for me.

Oh man this is all terrifying lol! It seems to be eating off the rock now so I think I might rock one more week in the QT just to make sure he is still healthy. It is beautiful though so I hope all goes well. Thank you everyone for the information!
