Potters angel problems

I got a new potters angel on sunday and he has not been eating any food that I've tried to give him. I've seen him pick in the rocks and eat some algae but I'm worried.

Note: water parameters have been perfect since Sunday are still today sg is 1.022

Note: he has been swimming up to my peppermint shrimps and blood shrimp and turning his side to them like he wants to be cleaned by a cleaner shrimp!
 
I would think about feeding a new LFS.

I would bump your SG up to 1.0256.

What size tank? Reef or fish only? How long has it been set up?

Have you noticed its breathing rate being on the faster side?
 
Yeah I'm new to the hobby, and would think that the LFS would be helpful.

It's a 29g been up for a month I've had 2 clowns 2 peppermints and a blood shrimp. They have been in the tank for a week or so all very healthy looking and active.

I wanted to have a reef tank, but from what I've been reading with angels is a 50/50 shot on getting one that won't eat the coral.

As for the breathing he seems great, I read he would hide in the rocks alot, which he is doing and he comes out to swim every couple if mins or so and looks fine, but when it's feeding time he just wont eat the mysis shrimp, flakes, or pellets but after watching him for awhile I noticed he picks at the rocks and algae every so often.
 
Potters are difficult dwarf angels to keep, and to best in a mature tank, with lots of mature live rock to graze upon -- IMO/E, a month old tank is too new for a Potters.

You would hope/think that an LFS would be helpful, but unfortunately a lot of them are only out to make money.

I would think about picking up some prazi pro -- used to treat flukes, which are very common with dwarf angels.
 
Well that saddens me, I hope he last long. I will go pick up the meds today.

As for prazi treatment. Can you outline the prosecute for me? I'm scared to ask my LFS about anything now ( not your fault, I'm glad you pointed out that they can't be trusted all the time) and can I had it right to the DT? I don't have a running qt at the moment but plan on getting one
 
What temp are you keeping your tank at?

Read the bottle for the exact directions and amount. But... Turn off your skimmer, and remove any carbon. Pour in the correct amount for your water volume. After 5-7 days, do a water change, and repeat for another 5-7 days. I have used it in a full reef tank without any issues at all.
 
Without seeing your fish he has some kind of Parasite. Potter's must be treated in QT. Do you see any small white dots on him near gills or body. Was he eating at LFS before you got him. You should always ask to feed the fish that you want to buy. Ok , water is fine leave him at 1.22 and keep temp. no higher than 77. You must treat him with something for parasites. I used copper for my Potter. You must be very careful if you use copper. I find it works the best. You must get him eating. Very important try small pieces of flake food and live brime shrimp. Everything what the other said is true. Your tank is not mature but I have started out like that. The key to Potters is once they are eating . You must watch for his breathing that is very important. Also his color. I feed my Potter a product put out by Pro Salt called Angel Diet. You can find pygmy angel food at LFS. Next seven days will tell the story. Good Luck .. let us know hows he doing.
 
Well I'm sorry to inform everyone, while he started eating a little bit, it was to late.

I have learned a valuable lessing here, qt is important , and so is being careful to not take home the coolest looking fish you see before asking to see it eat :/ I have made this mistake for the last time. And moving forward I need to be more careful. Thanks all for the help.
 
Sorry to resd about your loss. Potters angels are very difficult. You are doing the correct thing asking for advice. Research a bit more first. I recommend looking for a beautiful fish that is relatively peaceful and easy to keep until your tank matures and you gain more experience. You will not be disappointed with such an approach.
 
I have a Potter for one year now. Not easy fish to keep. But it took me time to understand this fish. First you must QT this fish. Potters don't ship well. If you treat him in QT tank and starts eating this fish becomes hardy. I also like buying them small. I found one that I knew this is the one that won't die on me. Simply by watching this guy eat at LFS. Was eating everything you put in the tank. Still after 7 days he got ick . I saw him scratching on rocks. Breathing became more rapid. I treated for fluke too. I saw his color fade to from bright orange to a milk color orange. What saved him was I started the treatment before it over took him. Potters have about 5 to 7 days to live. If not treated or in hospital tank. I will post a picture of my guy later. Sorry for your lost.....one of my favorite fishes.....

Any other LFS in your area?
Do they have separate QT tanks? maybe in a back room?
I would suggest finding out what day they get their shipments in...go there and see where the new fish go...if it's into the stock tanks, out front...I'd think their story is BS!

IMO...Don't buy another Potters!

I'm a little confused by your statement.


I don't care where the fish comes from or what the LFS says I still treat all of them in QT. QT is not only for disease, but to keep them in an environment that is as stress free as possible. At least 2 rounds of Prazi is a must IMO. Copper/hypo after that is debatable and everyone has their thoughts/opinions. All of my fish go through a full treatment of Cupramine copper.

Colder temps, low 70's, lots of algae to graze on. Almost all of my potters will eat small bits of food in the water column if there is a good water flow. One thing which I have good luck with dwarfs as first foods is Veggie flakes, Omega One marine flakes and small pieces of Hikari mysis. I don't turn the pumps off when feeding as they seem to do much better when the food is moving at a good pace versus just floating or laying on the bottom. I don't stress if they don't eat in the first week, as long as they didn't come in skinny.
 
Thanks guys great advice guys, an I found a new LFS a little farther but much better I think. Very friendly not surly and with a bunch of attitude. They give me advice and tips and don't just try and persuade me to buy things. But now I am concerned, if he had parasites dose that mean my DT has them now? He has been out of the tank sense sunday. The clowns look fine and healthy. Should I be worried or doing something?
 
If he did have parasites then, yes, it is in your tank. I wouldn't do anything drastic right now, but get prepared with a QT setup that can handle all your fish and in which you can treat with medication. If you didn't see any signs of disease on the potters then just keep a close eye on all your fish and if they show any signs start treating in QT.
