Potters with ich

i recently picked up a potter angel and noticed last night that he may have the beginnings of ich.

I have a mixed reef, 60 gal cube.

what are my options?

I would say you can buy either a cleaner wrasse or get yourself a cleaner shrimp. I find the shrimp to be hit or miss, or hit for a longtime then stop any cleaning at all. The cleaner wrasse that I have in my reef keeps 26 fish clean, talk about busy. HTH

I have a flame angel that was suffering the same way.

Also with a mixed reef, and one cleaner shrimp I went to southwest reef and they sold two chemicals. I was very leery about chemicals and additives, but I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

2. Garlic Guard by Seachem

best of luck

the cleaner wrasse sounds interesting. i really don't want to do the chemical thing, not that im a hippy or anything, but a new different fish sounds cool.

John you have a picture of the wrasse

okay after a little (very little) research, i think the cleaner wrasse would starve in my system (only three fish), unless it can eat frozen food. Dennis (my Saltwater world) is a master at getting things to eat but it is a concern. I also found a neon goby. looks very similar to the wrasse, but is known to eat easier than the wrasse.

anyone have experience with a neon goby?

Hey Justin, why you sneaking around on the Albuquerque thread lol? I used to have a neon goby and he ate frozen food just fine. They can be kinda small (mine almost met his end in a powerhead), so make sure you get one that is good size. He always cleaned my tang and my hand whenever he got a chance.

New mexican....new mexico forum...

the neon sounds cool. do they hide in the rocks or are they always out and about. the wife wants more movement in the tank.

Mine hung out on the rocks, but would hide once the lights when out. He would wait for the tang to come over for a cleaning. If you want a fish with movement, get a vanderbilt chromis. They are fast!! I have one here at work.

i saw the list. but not sure if i will have the time to get down there. if anyone can get em to eat i bet it would be you. the potters seems to be doing better. the white speckles were realy small and were only there for a bout two days. i looked last night and couldn't see anything.

Careful, ich can go dormant as it runs in cycles. I have a cleaner wrasse that eats well. Also a former resident of My Saltwater World, LOL... I would recommend one because not only are they beneficial but they are pretty cool little fish anyway. Adding Garlic to your food mixture is a good idea anyway even if they don't have ich. It helps build fish immunities and also makes their coats shiny and pretty looking.

i was wondering if i just press the garlic in a press, like your cooking with it, then how much do you add?

also the more food the wrasse eats does it ever become ineffective as a cleaner. kinda like barn cats, if you feed them they don't chase mice.

Justin, the cleaner wrasse I have also came from Dennis over there in at My Saltwater World. It does eat food but still always wants to be on the fish doing it's job. They are really cool active little fish.

No experience here with a neon goby!

Make sure to use fresh garlic cloves!!! The enzyme allicin is what you are after and will be broken down in a matter of hours. Thanks

What you will want to do is crush up a few garlic cloves and soak it in the food. The cutting or crushing causes two components of garlic alliin and the enzyme alliinase to interact which produces allicin which becomes very unstable exposed to air. I have no faith or stock in the bottle crap that they sell for aquariums. Also do not dump ant stop parasite or other related produces in your DT but will help in a QT tank. There is no drug or miracle bullet that will eradicate ich from a tank, except copper and hypo. Thanks

I have also have read awhile back that cleaner wrasses are hard to keep and can actually pull chunks out of there host. Though i have no experience with this matter you will have to ask Dennis and John. Thanks

Steffen Sparks

Wow, I have had several cleaner wrasse and while it is entirely not impossible, I have never experienced one pulling out a chunk of a fish. As far as hard to keep I do have to agree that generally they do not live long lives either suicide by jumping or starvation. The one I currently have does eat frozen foods so they are not impossible to keep. Just keep in mind that cleaner wrasse are not a permanent solution to ich or any parasite, rather they are there as a prevention/ maintenance measure...
