Powder blue tang primer

I have had my pb for almost 4 years. One of my favorite fish. He is the king of the tank and lets any new commer know who is boss! He is also the most active fish in my 180.
In my experience inorder to keep this fish long term successfully, qt and a good size tank is a must.
Everything that goes in my tank goes through a full 8 weeks qt.

From when you first put your Powder Blue in your tank, approximately how long did it take to start eating:

1. Frozen mysis or brine?
2. Pellets?
3. Flake?
4. Nori?
5. Other? What?

I am a firm believer in Qting all new comers to make sure they are disease free, and just as important are eating very well before going into my display. I Qt all fish for a minimum of 8 weeks and they must eat a varied diet with vigor before I move them. My powder blue was eating anything I put in the tank.

So you're saying it was eating anything you put in the QT from day-1?

No, sorry if that is what it came across as. It ate Nori and mysis day one and my homemade mash after a few days and spectrum pellets by the end of the week. It would eat anything after the second week. Again sorry for the confusion. I find it much easier getting my fish eating well in my QT.

Over 8 years in my care now. PS - He's not fat, he's just big boned ;)

Holy Moly - what a chunky guy ! Looking good

I've had trouble keeping PBTs on 2 occasions and I am nervous to take the plunge again. I am suspicious that the first 2 were from less than reputable LFS so I am hoping that getting a healthy one will be the key !

like others have stated these guys should be in a 6ft tank at least. I moved mine from my old 5ft tank to my new 8ft tank and this guys was swimming like I've never seen before. From one side of the tank to the other, I felt so bad for him being stuck in my 5ft for so long. Well he seems to be happy now.

Quick update on this guy. Hard to believe that previous post was from 2012. Here he is now - my prized Powder Blue / Gold Rim hybrid.

I know this is not a disease thread, but I'm hoping you all can help. I have had this hybrid powder blue in QT for 3 days. When I got home from work this evening, I noticed this on the eyes. (this is the larger of the two, but both eyes show this)

I am preparing a freshwater dip, and I may have to move the fish out of the QT if there is something that is causing this. I have had several other fish in the QT for 2-3 weeks, and they are now doing fine in the DT. Perhaps something got left behind and is now affecting this PBT?

I'm a longtime reefer and fish keeper, but had never kept a powder blue until now. Saw a bunch at my LFS and selected the one that was most interested in food. It's been in my QT tank for about two weeks now and eats pretty much anything I add to the tank except nori. None of my tangs ever ate it in QT, so no biggie. Cautiously optimistic.

Ca1ore- Congrats on the powder blue. I've also kept fish for many years and have never kept a powder blue or an achilles. I'm very tempted to try one or the other. I hope yours does well!

I just added a small/mid size powder blue tang to my 135 display tank about a week ago. I'm also cautiously optimistic too. He eats nori but doesn't seem to eat pellets or PE mysis food yet. He's constantly grazing the rocks and glass for algae. I have a yellow and purple tang that's been in my tank for 4 years so adding the PBT last was per reading recommndations from the boards. So far so good as there is little to no harrassment from the other tangs and no ich outbreak. My tank has been up and running since 2011 and is currenlty a mixed reef slowly converting to an sps dominant.

Ive had mine almost 2 months now and its probably my favorite fish. I introduced it at the same time as a yellow tang, kole tang, and ranfords goby. All are doing great and the pbt eats anything I feed it.

I would increase your feedings, add nori if you don't already. He is looking a bit thin considering you've had him 2 months now. Good luck!

I've had mine a few years now. Not as fat as Peter's, but pretty fat. He never causes any trouble. Great fish.
