Powder Blue Tang

Can anyone who successfully keep a powder blue tang please share some tips? Heard that they are famous for itch and can rip out the whole tank easily. Like to have one but scare to take the risk.

Major qt for 4 to 6 weeks for sure in copper. Or ttm, which if your more on the new side of fish keeping is a hard chore but works amazing if done correctly.

Battled with Ich before. Now tank is Ich free and only put fish into my tank after TTM and QT fishes.

Have had my Powder Blue for 5 months and its healthy, fat and pest free.

Anything wet that comes in can possibly bring Ich in again. Super paranoid everytime I want to add fishes, inverts, macros, or corals.

Known people who’ve kept for 10 + years without many issues. Start with a good sized tank. I’m not sure how big yours is but what I mean is don’t put in a 29 etc with means to upgrade. Unless you have the new tank already/it is in construction etc already confirmed purchase, I believe a lot of tangs especially blues die because of the stress of tiny tanks. Not from the size itself but because of the health issues that arise in sensitive fish such as these when stressed. Because of this I would start big and be ready to upgrade even bigger just in case. If not able to upgrade make sure you have a new home already arranged and not giving back to the pet store as people don’t want large tangs. They want cute little babies that don’t look too big for their tank and than replace them with another baby when they get too big. Te problem with this is so many tangs are being taken from the wild but them all these adults/sub adults have nowhere to go as there are not enough people with the large enough tanks. So make sure you have an alternative plan just incase :) also make sure you have a uv light in your system. Will help reduce chances of disease dramaticall. Since putting one on our large tank we have had no issues and that is over a year and a half now. Our nano without the UV however has had some illness but thankfully all recovered. Feed a varied diet with added benefits like garlic etc and watch closely for illness. If you keep up with care IT IS POSSIBLE to have a healthy blue tang!! Sorry for the huge paragraph of info, but I hope you find some of it useful haha. Good luck!

Thanks for all the inputs. But somehow qt for PBT didn't sounds to work at least for me.

Oh have you had one before and not had success? What went wrong with them and maybe we will be able to suggest something

Few years back I got one from Aquatic Collection. He was in their tank for more than 30 days so I thought it was ok to just add in the tank. He did well for six weeks then die one day.

For my second attempt, I had a 10g qt tank. Had one in there for couple weeks and he ate frozen mysis and brine shrimps. Stopped eating after the second week and started to see white spots on him and didn't make it after few days.

Any fish with ich that is brought into your system can rip out your whole tank. It’s not a powder blue fish problem but a qt problem. Qt all fish to avoid ich disaster.

3 weeks in cupramine treatment and 2 weeks with no treatment for observation. 5 min fresh water dip between each transfer. Best to feed hikari seaweed extreme in my experience during qt. Keeps them fat and happy while they loose a bit of appetite during treatment. No short cuts.

Pbt in a 10 gallon qt isn't gonna make it. They need to swim as they have high metabolism and like an achilles need high flow , clean water and as little added stress as possible.

Your in the Bay Area right? I was looking over Craigslist and there is a guy in your area that has pbt, Achilles and tons of other fish. The ad made me believe he was doing ttm and proper qt before selling these fish. If you want a clean one this might be the way.

^^^ try the add this person suggested. If he has plenty of tangs you should be able to go look and hopefully he is doing it the right way and you will be able to bring a healthy tang home. Qt in a 29 gallon or larger I would say and keep water good as pp said

I got one from him, healthy and fat without any disease has been in my tank for over a year now. Biggest bully to all algae eating fish especially the starry blenny.

I've tried Achilles and Powder Browns from LFS in the past a long time ago as a rookie and never had success. At the time, I had a 40g separate tank, but only kept in there for a week before I thought they were ok to my 120g display.

A little over a year ago, I tried a Powder Blue from bluezoo mail order, and got a keeper. My DT wasn't ich free since I never QT previous fish, but my Yellow Tang, Bristletooth Tang, pair clowns, mandating goby, pair flame wrasse all healthy for over a year already. This time, my 40g tank was plumbed into same system as display. Also, I kept the Powder Blue in there by himself for 4 weeks, eating pellet and Nori. After introducing to display, yellow tang would chase every now and then but not fight. Also, Powder Blue would get minor ich about once a month for about almost a year, but now healthy and hasn't had ich since then. Probably a lot of luck, but it worked out. Depends on health of fish coming in, but keeping it stress free during acclimation and QT seems tops.
