Power bill?

Using the calculator on the home page I am calculating around $50/month for the cost of energy used from my tank?
Can that be right? I didnt think it would be that much money?
I have a 75 gallon tank with (2) 250watt metal halides, a few water pumps, a skimmer and a heater???

.....I have roommates so I'm trying to figure this out to be fair to them

also....does anyone know how many watts the maxijet1200's are?

That sounds reasonable, if not low. MarineDepot.com has power draw for the Maxi-Jets, I think.

wow $50 is on the low side? I was way off with my guess.....I figured on about $20.......its only a 75 gallon tank.......might need to rethink my thoughts on upgrading to a larger tank!

Here in WA we get cheap power, around $.07 per kilowatt hour so I calculated my future energy usage to be around $50 for a 150 gallon. 720 watts light and about 300 worth of pumps+heater and other equipment and such.

I just started runninG my new liGhtinG setup for my 125 Gallon, and I was pretty shocked to see my power bill went up almost a $100/month. Of course I went a little overkill on the liGhts and am now runninG 3x400 watt MH with 2x140 VHO actinics instead of 4x96 watt PC's

I wish my electricity bill was $100. Over three times that... Maybe it isn't totally from the tank, BUT, while the calculator shows that all my pumps, lights, fans, etc add only $40 to the bill per month, I have to keep my downstairs AC at 78 even during the day when no one is home (this is new with the tank). I live in Texas and the temp range is about 78-the mid to high 90's with days in the triple digits. in NC, you probably don't have to deal with as much heat as we do which should help.

The tank has to be emitting heat into the room, which the AC has to compensate for, and that added energy is about another $60 per month. It may have more to do with the inefficiancies of my AC unit (only a 10 seer and 8 years old) but that is the difference between last year without and tank and this year with a tank. Energy costs are the same, about $.11 per KWH. My wife can't beleive it either At this rate, I could probably get a chiller and it would pay for itself in under a year, including the additional wiring I would need to have done.

I will say that I added a fan above the sump and it is pulling lots of heat out of the water so it may be that I can raise the ac temp during the day which will help. Plus, I am getting the AC's serviced which should help as well.

My last electric bill was $410 for June 15 to July 15. $150 of that was for my tank! Worth every penny.

That seems high to me. I guess it depends on the energy cost in your area, mine is .08 per Kwh. I have a 240 gallon with 1000 watts of MH, and 400 watts of pc's. 4 Tunze 6100's, mag24, mag3, eheim 1262. All this is costing me 60 per month. I only run the MH's for 6 hours a day though, that could add a bit if you run them for longer.

I run 2,400 watts of MH, 640 watts of VHO's and 385 watts of PC's. Along with 8 external pumps. And a 1 hp chiller, aslo run (2) 175 watt MH on my fuge opposite my main lights. and various other equipment

I have a ton of different tanks will different types of lighting. My power bill last month was just over $500. Over 2 dozen VHOs and 10 halides. It doesnt help living in FL with this HEAT!!
