PowerHead or Closed Loop w/ WavySea

Im currently going to be redoing my 300 gallon and was thinking of putting a closed loop in the system with a wavysea. I have been using Hydor Korilna or however their spelled. I like that they move a great area of water but they are kinda an eye sore.
Any opinions on this would be nice.

Closed loops cost much more in order to move the same amount of water as powerheads. Koralias don't move much water. I would consider getting some Tunzes or vortechs if you can afford them. They will cost less then a closed loop, use less electricity, and are more controllable. I also think that closed loops look worse than powerheads with all of the pipes and bulkheads.

I have Vortechs on one tank and Hydor Koralia 12V on another. Both work very well the major difference is cosmetic. Price is also a consideration.

well I never look at the cost regarding this hobby cause if I did I think I would have had multiple Heart failures, so If it was me I would go Closed loop with 2 wavy sea's in the corners turning 180 points. Just my 2 cents

the flow of the Vortechs and Tunze are better then the Korallas, but you cant bet the cycling/alternating flow. (left to right)

on my 240, i run a Reeflo Dart wide open for my return, and eventually i will have it hooked to a set of waveyseas/sea swirls

if i were you, i would look into doing that, and have a controllable powerhead on one/both sides.

thats just my opinion.

dahenley, if you have your dart open wide what kind of flow are you getting thru your sump?. i have my aquaeuro open about 85% or so and its far less powerfull then your dart but i was concerned with flow thru sump. i have no fuge in my sump just a skimmer and my heater.
corey

i have a skimmer section and a return. (my refugium section is seperate and it drains straight in the return so my skimmer doesnt skim any of the good stuff.)

my flow isnt too fast because of the depth of the tank. its 20" deep so it doesnt look like white water rafting.

thats just my setup. (oh, and the water level in my tank is about 1/2-1" above the overflow. (i dont have teeth, i made my own using gutter guard. so there is no restrictions and nothing can get in my overflows.)

I would go with a closed loop because you can always add power heads later. I had a closed loop on my 180 and didn't think I needed it for my 270. I really regret not putting one in...
