powerhead ?

Not sure when the new HKs are suppposed to hit the market but they are much smaller than the originals & are reportedly using even less power.

I am just looking for more of the "gentle breeze" powerhead rather than the firehose old school types i have now. the one's I have now are awesome flow but it's wayyyyyy too directed.

Modded MJ's put out more than 2x the flow the K2 or K3 puts out.
I have a hard time believing that. A $10 upgrade takes the normal output of the MJ1200 from 250gph to 1200gph - 1700gph?

Call me skeptical, because I am...

tip:

nuthin' wrong with those old school MJ's.

If unmodded direct their outs parallel to (and just under) the water's surface.

Or mod 'em. It's too easy. Saw 1/2" or more off of their discharge nozzle.

I will do that...maybe tomorrow. I actually need to get parts for one of my old MJs. I know, I sound like a hypocrite, but this is for my water making bin. I swear! Really! :lolspin:

Well, if the MJ1200 really can put out that kind of flow, I wish I had known a few years ago. I would have modded the 2 MJ1200s I had in my 29g tank - in particular, I would have repositioned the head to much higher in the tank. I had my unmodded MJ1200 about halfway up, and clearly was not generating enough gas exchange where I had it.

Of course, that said, I had FAR too little flow in that tank (one unmodded MJ1200 for flow, and one for my AquaC Remora HOB skimmer). No wonder I was constantly fighting that tank (I did SO many bad things - I'm embarrassed to even mention them on RC).

I use mjs, modified and not modified . I also use Korilias . Like them both. Modified mjs can be noisier though.

I agree with Tom, mj1200s (or mj900s for that matter) are noisy with the sureflow mods and take more watts to operate than a K3. However the modded mjs put out a broader flow pattern IMO. I run both but prefer the K3.

it sounds like one way to mod almost any ph is to saw off the outlet tube to next to nothing and it will result in a broader flow. right??

Also, if i do go for the Korallia's what size should I get for a 75 gallon RR, high and open stack sps near the top. was thinking 3's but have a opp for 4's at a decent price. would that be too much?

I'm trying to remember how much I paid for the mod kit from Marine Depot. I think it was under $15.00. A very reasonable price for the advantage, at any rate.

kinda funny....

kinda funny....

I have a pair of K2's that seem to be slowing down a bit. I took them apart and soaked in vinegar and it helped a bit. Anyways, a buddy gave me a modded MJ, so I took it out of my mixing container and decided I'd try it in our 37g (30"L), and half our unmounted corals took to flight!

I was amazed at the water they push.

I try to stay out of the store stuff but I am familiar with the Korallia, tunze's , and the modded MJ's as the store uses all 3 of them .. All are great options the modded MJ is gph/$ ratio the winner for sure but be warned it is un unbelieveable ammount of water flow!!!

on a 75 gall mixed reef what should I be running? was thinking a pair of k3's but don't know if that will be too much.
