powerheads in QT

Is it necessary to run a powerhead in your QT, or can you get by with just an air stone? I'm trying to avoid purchasing another powerhead.

Are you running a HOB filter? My QT (20G) has HOB filter, heater and cheap flourescent light. My hospital tank is the same setup - so no powerhead for me.

air stone should be fine, provided it is sized appropriately to the tank.

the main reason people don't use air stones for saltwater isn't that they don't work, it's that the small bubbles breaking at the surface tend to instigate salt creep.

i use air stones on my TTM tanks since they're so cheap they're effectively disposable. they work great.

You really should be running a HoB filter on your QT. An airstone isn't really necessary then. PH can be helpful for certain kinds of fish that like flow.

Agree with ca1ore and as stated above, that's what I currently use on my QT and hospital tank. Depending on what size QT you're running, you can get a good HOB filter off Amazon for around $25.

That's all good information. My QT is small, only 10gallons.
So the HOB is used for water agitation and small filtration at the same time?

I have a small hydor powerhead for my 25gal DT, but i have since ordered a better powerhead for it, and will move the hydor to the QT.

I figured I could just do a water change in the QT on a weekly bases, especially since i won't use it much(i hope).

Yes, water agitation and filtration....just obviously remove the filter cartridge if you're going to treat with any medication since the carbon within the cartridge will most likely contain carbon. This is why I have two separate systems, one QT (to observe) and one Hospital (to medicate).

Also, it's good to put a couple PVC pieces, elbows, etc. in the QT for the fish to seek shelter in.

Do you also QT corals, or do you just dip them? I don't want to buy another light fixture.

+1 Heater and Airstone. That is how I do it.

For corals, I do just dip them (for all non-acros) but for a acros I try to always buy from trusted sources or individuals. Then I'll inspect, remove the base of the coral and dip as well.

You remove the base to ensure you're also removing any parasites that may be on it, or do you remove the base so that you can glue on your rocks without those ugly plugs?

An AC30 is plenty for my 10 gallon QT.

I only use heater and airstone in my 20L QT. My air pump is rated for a 200 gallon, so I have serious water movement and aeration in the tank.
