PPE's

stocker,

My PPE's grow dismally slow. In over a year, I have gone from 4 polyps, removed one, grew to six, then removed another and now have seven (net 4 polyps in a year). Everything else grows like weeds. I've heard of people who have PPE's that grow like weeds, but they add crack to their water;).

zoazoa,

I know I posted the picture to show the differance.....They are still sweet none the less.

Feeding does not make a sugnificant difference in growth, just size of the polyp IME. Mine grow at a decent rate, (not bragging) I dont count the new polyps...colony is to big, but I try to frag once a month and my colony is still growing alittle instead of shrinking in size. :)

No crack in my tank... I dose with speed & X instead. Crack only makes my polyps skinny ;)

So me and a friends tank is the only one that gets stupid fast growth for ppe? All my zoa's grow fast except my purple red ppe.
everyother zoa grows crazy fast. My ruby reds are another that grows like a weed.
Take it easy folks i dont have any to spare yet.;) i am restocking because an emp angel took out 6 whole colonys of rare zoas in one day. I guess the expensive ones taste better.;)

Sorry jovreefer, we must have been typing at the same time. Kudo's to your success!
My secret (i think) is very clean water. I keep my nirtaes undetectable and po4 under .05 pretty close to .02.
I feed my acans and micros once a week with rotifyiers and sps once a week with golden pearls, and cyclopeeze.
I do dose seachems ammino acids (Miniamal amts) but i cant contribute their growth to that. The perameters are very stabil and clean for the health of my sps so that could be a factor as well.
JMO though i am no scientist, or marine biologist. I have in the past with an all zoa tank try to keep slightly dirtier water because people used to say well zoa's like dirty water. Now i think the opposite. Clean stabil water with a food source once a week and removing it before it gets broken down is my thoughts on the matter to keep any coral happy. I believe nitrates and po4 are a growth limiter in all corals not just sps.
I am not saying all you guys must have dirty water i am just saying this is what has worked better for me and its my exp with any coral. Good levels of trace minerals, and low nitrates, and po4 is whats in the ocean where they come from so why take a opposite approach for zoa's and rics like we have done in the past?

I agree with you Creetin....I have found that to be true myself...I don't have SPS but my leathers and LPS all grow at high rates. I have my Nitrates are at 0 and Phos are at 0. I think keeping a constant light schedual is key also. My lights haven't changed in over 5 years. I do adjust for seasons though.

Ahhhh. The X makes them happy to be around everything else, creating more 'growth' opportunities;). No one wants skinny PPE's:D.

I have mine in my 125 mixed. When I say mixed, it was (before AEFW treatment) ~70 sps frags/colonies, ~65 morphs of zoas, and ~35 LPS corals, with a few leathers, etc. (hence the 120 going up this weekend;)). I run an MRC MR2 with a PCX 55, so I'm skimming like a mad man (and it pulls some nasty stuff out in less than two days time). I do have a bryopsis problem, so there must be nutrients stored up somewhere. I always have and always will run a DSB, so that may be some of my downfall. The bryopsis mysteriously appeared after a red bug treatment in December... My PO4 was undetectable with LaMotte, but the reagents were nearing their end date. I haven't replaced thhem yet. NO3 is always zero (Sailfert), but I have three decent sized clams in the tank, too. I'd sure like to know how to increase the growth rate. There are too many cool corals out there I could trade for if I had more;).

Hi guys,
are these PEs? I just got this frag from a friend of mine and he wasn't sure what it is. RevHtree, they look like your avatar tho.

Not PPE's. but are some sort of people eater. I have some that are similar, but there is a lite pink rim just inside the skirts. It had to color up to that, though. I see some potential for the pink. PPE's and RPE's only have a green slit mouth. The green doesn't radiate from the mouth.
