Science and Honor!
So when I get back from Utah tomorrow I need to get a few things done on my tank but just wanna see what others think since I'm having shoulder surgery Thursday morning to repair or remove torn cartridge in my left shoulder.

Obviously I won't be ableto lift anything for a few weeks.

So first

-water change
- change gfo
- change filter sock
- clean the glass blast the rocks for any build up
- make sure I have enough food for my fish
- and top off my ATO
- make sure my heater is working properly
- clean my powerhead

Is there anything I'm possibly overlooking?

Since it might be a little longer then usual to do a WC is it recommended to do a slightly larger water change? Instead of ten gallons maybe 20?

I won't do large water change unless something definately wrong but I don't do water change that often either.....

take it from someone who went thru 6 shoulder procedures over 2.5 yrs on both shoulders, you won't be doing water changes for awhile on your own so line up people to help you. I lost a great deal of livestock bc I didn't have the help and couldn't do it. Good luck with your surgery.

I had shoulder surgery last year/april. While i was on my (vacation), i was able to build my tank stand. I had surgery on tuesday, and by saturday i couldnt stand one more rerun of i love lucy, so i went to garage.. I had someone help me cut the big piece of plywood down and did rest myself. As long as i didnt reach above my head, i was good to go. Of course, my surgery was simple impengment surgery.. Needless to say, thinking back i could have done a waterchange from my sump like i normally do. One handed.. but im sure its a case by case basis.. prepare for the worst.

Get help or call a maintenance company like Age of Aquarium. I line up a tank sitter to check my tank daily, but I always keep Age's number with my sitter. I can help out as well if I am in town, good luck with your surgery!

When I had my wrist surgery I invested in a controller and just did a normal water change as well as upgrading my UV sterilizer. I also had a lot of help that was greatly appreciated from local reefers.

Thanks everyone! Yeah I'm just going to do a regular WC and gfo swap, and if worse case scenario and recovery does take a couple weeks il being giving rob a call! Since he's like 3 minutes away from me! Thanks rob!

And scott update your build thread so I can have some recovery reading material!

+1 on what Scott says. I usually have Age of Aquariums on speed dial. I too can help if anything goes wrong. I wouldn't do a large water change before your surgery. If nitrates are at 0, there's no need to do a big water change.

Not that surgery wasn't fun but damn anasthesia sucks!
The doctor told my dad that as they removed the breathing tube, and woke me up I was fighting the doctors and the male nurses it took only 4 of them to hold me down, which I have not one bit of memory, and then I spent Monday through wednsday in Utah do the nurse asked me if I knew were I was I remember saying utah!

Just thought is share my fun experience with anasthesia

I find it weird that I was angry and aggressive since if uv met me I'm really chill and easy going just wish they woulda recorded me to laugh at myself lol

Oh yeah then I had a case of turrets where the only word I knew as I woke up in recovery was eff, and shitaki without the aki

yeah the breathing tube is the worst.. i always have a sore throat for days.. and im the same when i come out.. I always yell at my nurse.. Nurse give me some effin ice chips.. my throat hurts.. I know you can.. common... its not water.. good luck on recovery.

Hahaha I laughed so hard it hurt my throat and chest! Even tho it already hurt yeah it's funny now that I think of it but at the moment it's like Uncontrollable lol the nurse just sat on the computer ignoring my rant lol all I wanted was water!!!
Then to make things worse my dad is just laughing cus I never curse in front of him I got ****ed at my ice chips when one fell

And thanks mr Cody bean!

Do a water test so if anything is off you can correct it now before you're in pain. Good luck with the surgery.

Funny stories on this thread :-P

Surgery is no fun specially right after. Went through this one month ago yesterday, major surgery spinal fusion in lower back. 5 days at the hospital, first two weeks was tough with limited mobility and mostly in fain. But they gave me the good stuff to take home (oxy) norco not cutting it. I'm now in a long road to recovery.

Thank god my wife hasn't complain yet for taking care of me and the multiple tank inside and in the garage.

Take care buddy hope you get better soon.
