Princess Anthias

Grizzled & Cynical
Bought a bunch of resplendent anthias last week and got a princess as well. Trying to work out if what I have is a male or a female. Tried to get a picture, but the darn thing is always darting about the tank. Anyone have any pictures of them - ideally males versus female? I have kept many anthias species before, but never a princess - good news is that my one stow-a-way is eating well along with the 7 resplendents.

From what i have gathered off the net they are all born females like large angels are and when the dominant male dies the largest female turns male type thing. As far as telling them apart the only thing i read was the male should be more vibrant in color than a female... Not sure that helps any or not Simon

Ah, that's very helpful thanks. Originator of that thread actually used the correct name (go figure) whereas I searched under 'anthias'. :o Still not sure what I have is male or female, though my LFS got a bunch in and they all look like the one I have, so maybe female. Beautiful fish!

Best I can do on the photo front ..... top pic princess is to the right, bottom pic she is in the middle. Male resplendent is at the top of the first pic, though majority of the females appear to be super females.

It at least confirms that I'm not a compete dullard at doing an internet search :) as I had largely concluded the same thing. It does appear, with these smaller pseudoanthias species, that the males are bit more difficult to spot. I've kept Evansi a lot over the years and still don't have the foggiest on which are females and which are males.
