Prisitine plumbing thread!

You guys got nothin on this...

Always my favorite

It's a nice setup, but there's one big issue I have with it.

There's electrical outlets at the bottom, with many things that need opening up for maintenance above. The sensors will eventually need pulled out for cleaning, and the filter housings will need removed to replace the filters. All of which usually don't result in a perfectly dry procedure ;)

Guess it's an older post, but still worthy of comment I suppose, for safety reasons.

What kind of PVC primer and glue are you guys using to keep it so clean looking?

I used to do a lot of plumbing for pool equipment and used the standard purple primer and christy's red hot glue.

Well i'm setting myself up for argument here but I'm gonna say it anyway.

In an aquarium set up, primer is not needed for PVC. A good coat of clear PVC glue is all that is needed. You do not need the primer.

true. there is no pressure, so if you have a crappy glue joint, there is no chance of it busting or separating. but, whats 2 dollars worth of primer.......

plus, it makes the joints stick better. especially if you use some kind of spa flex.

Actually, I believe it is required for spa flex.

The correct way to join PVC is Glue and Primer. Why would want to forgo doing something properly to save no time... and a paltry amount of money.

On top of that., your joints have a much higher tendency to leak if primer is not used.......that's why it's made and mandated under code for residential plumbing.

PVC joined with just glue..... Physical Bond

PVC joined correct w/ glue and primer..... Chemical Bond

If you want to risk leaks and having to cut out plumbing because you don't think you need primer.... go right ahead. I'll spend the extra $2-3$ and do the job correctly, and not have a single worry about a leak.

You can also get clear primer. You might not be able to find it at Home Depot, but it's available.

How do you guys remove the black text on the pipe/fittings? I tried PVC cleaner but it tends to smear things.

if its on the pipe... you might try a rag soaked in alcohol and rub it.
cleaner does smear, but if you re-apply, then it will begin removing it. (just keep it wet)
hope that helps.
(or, you could just paint it, or twist it to where the print is on the back side)

Gluing PVC without primer is still a chemical bond. It's simply not as strong a bond as one made with primer. The primer removes the manufacturing glaze on the pipe and slightly softens the surface but it does not change the bond from physical to chemical.
