I built a stand with Kent E once and all we used was a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" oak ply. It was finished in one afternoon. No extra skinning step, more room underneath, and very easy to do. We did have to use a few hardwood pieces to create corner supports and tank support rim. We also had access to a good tablesaw.
I had way more issues with crappy dimensional lumber drying and twisting on my most recent build and I spent several days gluing a bunch of hardwood pieces on the outside to make it look decent. Anyways, just a different idea.
