Problem with frogspawn

I just got this purple frogspawn this past weekend. Over the past few days, only during the photo period, it gets this bubble in it. It starts out smaller in the morning, and the max size is shown in the photo right before I shut my lights of for the night. Any thoughts or ideas? Im at a total loss, and any help would be insanely appreciated.

the original mother colony has always done the same thing. does not seem to hurt it. can't tell you why. the green does not do it

Maybe it's the mouth poofing out to catch food. I've noticed with my spawn that it's mouth will gape open and puff out when I am feeding and/or when I turn off the powerhead.

I think you will find this 'puffing up' of LPS is still a mystery, even amongst the 'experts'. There are some speculated answers, but noone knows for sure. I was asking a question in Eric Borneman's forum the other day, and noticed a thread about this with a closed brain or something. We used to have a favia that always did this at the shop. Actually , we have had a few that have done it. Some think it has to do with lighting, some think it's reproduction. The mouth of a frogspawn is deep in the center of each head, so I don't know about it being a feeding response...could be.

I got a good response in the LPS forum this afternoon.

"They usually do that when they are building new skeleton or budding off a new head."

The person that responded showed me a picture of his coral that did that, and Eric Borneman told him that was the reason. A few people asked me to show the picture him and said that he collects pics like that, so I did. I never would have guessed that was the reason for it.

I don't know if you noticed mine doing it in my tank but I have 1 head splitting into 2 and it has a big bubble a bit like that but only when its inflated. at night you just see a sorta mutant almost 2 headed frogspawn. That's a really cool picture you got of it too!

Looks like that'll make babies fast!

it's splitting, mine has grown from 5 to about 50 heads. The one time I got a bubble , it dropped a head. It's good!!
