Problem with protein skimmer 9015

Dear Roger,

I purchased a Tunze 9015 a few years back in 220V, due to the fact that I live in Saudi Arabia and the voltage in the house is 220V. However, it was only after I received it that I noticed that it wasn't 50/60 Hz and that is when the problems started as Saudi is 220V 50Hz and the pump runs in 60 Hz. At the time I had asked you about this and you mentioned switching the impeller to the US model and that worked for a while, but it would never restart properly. I later switched to an ATI and that was the end of the Tunze.

I recently installed it on a new tank and replaced the pump with the newer eJet turbelle for the 9016 in 110V 50Hz. It works fine but I feel the performance isn't as good as when the previous pump was running. Previously, when I used to remove the skimmer cup, while the unit was running with the 9015 pump, the bubbles used to reach the edge and/or overflow from the skimmer, with the 9016 pump the bubbles are quite low in the body and the amount of skimmate is much drier than the previous pump. I can never get passed the 100-120 ml mark before having to clean out the cup because the neck is already full of gunk. I am also having alot of micro bubbles released from the bottom of the skimmer. All parts seem to be mounted correctly, water level is maintained at the blue mark and the air nozzle is open completely...Is there anything I can do to increase the wetness of the skimmate??

Thanks in advance,

Nick

I am not clear on the replacement, was it 220/50 or 110/60? The hz is very important as the motors and impellers are different a 60 Hz impeller is smaller and will really underperform at 50Hz.

Sorry Roger I got confused with the HZ and didn't double check what I was writing... the replacement pump is an ejet 110V/60Hz so its running at the correct frequency given that Saudi Arabia is at 60Hz...

I would double check that the pump is installed so the output of the pump in the clear pipe, make sure the impeller housing is not damaged, you might try the housing of your 9015 pump which would be the same. A 9011.040 pump in an older skimmer has a lot of free movement as it is narrower, you might try a shim between the back of the pump and the skimmer body to keep it from moving easily.

The ejet is slipped into the clear pipe correctly and I have wedged a piece of semi-soft plastic in order for it not to move as it was a bit loose... but to no avail. I'll double check in any case, maybe it has slipped... thanks Roger
