problems with deep dimension tanks?

I've been thinking about selling my custom rimless 200 gallon reef tank.
it's made of starfire and 3/4" glass and has an external overflow with bean animal drain.

i'm thinking of upgrading to a marineland 250dd but when i talk about it with some custom tank manufacturers, they tell me that there have been a lot of blow outs and they're not made to withstand the flow of a reef.

i'm not interested in spending $3500 on a custom tank of similar size when i can get a 250dd for $1250 less.

does anyone have an input?

I run 3 mp60 a gyre and about 2000 gph from the return pump. No issues for 3 years. I think the issue that some might have is not having a rock solid stand. Just a thought.

I agree. I don't like their stand and they're overpriced in my opinion. I would rather make my own. but then there's warranty failure

It's hard to say. It's in the interest of the custom shops to 'scare' you away from a mass market tank, so I think you have to take their comments with a grain of salt. Plus, none of us really know how many DD tanks get sold, and what the true failure rate is. It may be no higher than any other tank. Remember, people are much more likely to post about a negative experience than a positive one, so there's that also.

Having said that, a cursory look at the DD tanks versus a quality custom quickly reveals that the latter are much better built and would be less likely to fail. Though, again, doesn't mean the DD will fail. I own the big Marineland 265, and with a properly built stand, I have had no issues so far. Had mine drilled by my LFS, so warranty was toast anyhow so I built my own stand.

Makes sense to me. I'll be posting pictures of my reef tank later today then to start the selling haha. I can't wait to get my hands on a 250 DD

I would go custom just so I could have a warrantied coast to coast/Bean setup. The corner flows don't excite me.
