Well, I went on a business trip for 2 weeks. When I returned, I notice the corals were sort of pale. I did a 20% water change. Also, I have to clean the glass more often. I am not pleased so far. The urchins clean more of the rock than the bioclean. I am not too sure of the product. I am testing and the results are good.

I am getting a little tired of the chase to get a healthy colorful tank. Very tired. And the expense. Now I am told that I may need another skimmer. I am using the Octopus NW 150 on my 90g.

I am going to set a time limit. This is the final year, 2008.

Maybe it's time to call it quits for you? If you are tired of trying to get the perfect look then you may just be burned out. I love spending money and time trying to get the perfect colors, I'm obsessed, thats why it's a hobby.

come on now. you know that we all get into a rut every now and then. every so often we get "tired of this" then we come back with a vengence, even better than before. It's happen to me several times over the years. i've tried quitting many years ago then realized that i must start up again. just hang in there for awhile and that desire flame will burn again if not rage!

This may be your problem... This product does depend upon good skimming in order to remove the waste from your system... I have only been dosing the BioDigest, and BioOptim, but I have definately seen a decrease in the amount of film on my glass, not an increase... Oh, and an increase in the amount of skimmate...

On the other hand, if you completely strip your tank of nutrients, your corals will turn pale as well... This is what people go for when Vodka dosing to indicate what rations they need to use... I would be encouraged by toward this side since all of your testing turned out well...

I'm not sure which if either has caused your color loss, but those may be a couple of reasons... This is a hard hobby to keep track of, even if you are home every day... Many people can't even keep SPS... I would be happy that nothing in my tank is dead after I came home from a 2 week trip... If you're not there to make the minor adjustments necessary in order to make your tank thrive, you can't really expect to come home to a gorgeous tank... And of course we all dream of the maintanence free tank... Of course part of the joy in this hobby for me, is tinkering around with all my new toys/equipment... I'm not sure I would like this hobby as much if it were easy... Hope this helps... :)

I completely agree with that statement!

Believe me, I know the meaning of a hobby. I do a little woodworking and a couple of other crafts. I can see the improvements in my other crafts, but this reef tank is draining the life out of me. My other hobbly bring joy, I will consider your advise seriuosly. I am not one to give up, but I read the book "The Art of War" and this maybe the time to retreat.

OK Reefahoy, I am in Vero this long weekend and I am just thinking about everything, including the tank. I will hang in there. I will continue to do the work to improve the tank. I guess after seeing your tank last week, I was disappointed to come home and look at that thing I call a "reef" tank.

I will head back to Fort Lauderdale on Monday and re-energize my devotion to the tank.

Part of the challenge with any probiotic method is that its not one size fits all. You're adding variables into the mix and it takes time to do their "stuff". I am of the opinion that going slow with probiotic methods are the best... for your corals. IMHO, if you corals were pale, it could be N limitation and if so, the solution is simple: 1) feed more, or 2) dose aminos....

I think the Prodibio system has a slight disadvantage by not being dropper based like other systems.

Also, every tank is different, so it takes each tank, different lengths of time to get "dialed in"...

fwiw

dobly. the tank is not that far off. you just need time. when you finally get the right combo of variables i think you'll be quite pleased with your tank.

I've been dosing prodibio for a few months now and feel all I've gotten out of it was red slime algae.

I've been doing 1 biodigest and 3 bioptim in a 200g system every week for the first month and then every two weeks since. I'm not sure if I'm going to finish off what I have left or not. I think my corals are looking better but I'm tired of siphoning the red slime.

fiddling with too many variables at once, each tank is different amen

Try dosing just the Biodigest without the Biotim.

Slug,
I am having the same issue with the red slime. I was advised by gcarrol to dose the Optim separately from the Digest. Just as Just Dave is suggesting. Try this method before giving up. I will be starting the new dosage schedule this week.

I got the red slim issue too. I have one more dose of biodiget and optim left. I don't know if I will order another supply of the stuff.
The urchins are doing a good job of cleaning my rocks. I will post pics later.

IMO, the most important equipment required for this system to work is a LARGE skimmer. if you add bacteria that suppose to consume waste and the bacteria is not removed quickly via skimming, how else would you export the waste? adding the bacteria is only half the equation. the other half is to remove it quickly, hence LARGE skimmer. If the waste is not removed quickly then you will have red slime blooms, algae blooms ect. That's why this system seems to work for some and not for others. if you find someone it works for check out the size of the skimmer. if you find others it doesn't work for compare the skimmer size.

How often are you guys doing water changes with this system??? Have you altered scheduling due to the use of prodibio??? Are you using the full Prodibio system, or just the BioDigest and BioOptim??? I can see how you could polute a system using too much BioOptim and ReefBooster...

I do monthly 20% changes... I'm about through my 1st month using Prodibio next week... I've noticed some red slime this past week, but not bad... I figured it was only due to the fact that I'll be doing a water change next week... Currently I'm dosing BioDigest one week, and then the BioOptim the second, etc, etc... I'll start up the ReefBooster, Iodi+, and Stronti after the sixth week in my 120g... In my 58g I'm going to start dosing KZ Amino Acids and KZ Sponge Power in addition to the BioDigest and BioOptim after the sixth week... We'll see how that turns out... I'll be sure to keep you guys posted... :D

I have to add that I'm considerably overskimming... I have a Deltec APF 600 on my 58g, and a H&S A200-1260 on my 120g...
