Prodibio

Sounds good to me. I might not go with the vodka though. I have had mixed results with it. The Biooptim and the biodigest should do the work for you.

Please post results

Thanks
Scott

Don't go with Vodka ....evaluate Prodi on its own so you can tell what is or is not working....it is to tough to troubleshoot problems if you are mixing things with Prodi right from the start.

Later....after you know what the recomended doses do to your system, if you need a boost to the food source of the bacteria I would just add 1 extra amp of PTIM on the off week between regular dosing. But Only if you really find it is needed, and only after you have let your tank adjust to the recommended dosages.

You know I think you guys are right, I am going to leave out the vodka for now. I've actually dosed Vodka for a while at up to 10 ml per day with no ill effects but mixing and matching may be dangerous. I should of also mentioned my tank is around 300 gallons net.

its you dude. I can say that I had my share of problems that all new tanks go through, cycling issues. I was not looking for a magic cure but rather a natural approach to a low nutrient system.

I have stuck the course with prodibio and the results are finally paying off. The tank is now 5 months mature.

Todays test:
pH 8.05, alk 9.9, temp 77, ca 490, PO4 .015, sg 1.025.

I clean the glass about once a week now instead of daily. There is massive corraline growth on the foam wall and I have not had any coral lossess in months since correcting alk swings. All zoos looked great until three days ago when it looked like several colonies had been eaten by somthing. Still trying to figure this one out.

I'm very happy right now. Colors are brilliant!

How many vials per week of digest and bioptim were you adding until you got the results that you have now?
How much are you adding today of the same stuff?
I have also been adding these two products in my 2 month old tank.Though I can't read no3 and po4 I still have some algae growing on my 4" SB, is it still to early to have the benefits of prodibio?

My early observations. I normally run a large UV, 114w on a 280 display. In the past when I have experimented with turning I off for a period of time I saw a significate increase in algea on the glass, and a slight decrease it water clarity(may be the increased algea). After dosing the Prodi on Wednesday, I have not had to clean the glass and water is crystal clear. I feel pretty confident that the stuff is not "snake oil" ! :)

What means are you using to test Po4? I used Salifert Po4 for a while and always got a 0 result  . Then my RO membrane went and I saw a lot of algae, and did not know yet the membrane was bad. Salifert still showed 0, after some research it became apparant that any result on the Salifert test would mean my tank was better suited for macro algae farming. I traced my issue back to the membrane and used some GFO and the algae was gone in a week. My advice? Find someone with a Hanna meter and see if they'll test a sample for you. If your result is .05 or higher I bet running a GFO will rid you of algae.

I never changed my dosing scheme. I add one vial digest and one vial of biotim every other week.

Every tank I have set up has had issues with hair algae. Not sure if it is because I have too long a photoperiod or not. But I have cut lighting back to about 6 hours a day for the last 6 weeks or so and the algae is nearly gone. It is to the point that I have not done any manual pruning for over a month or two.

I did not see stability in the tank until 4 months and now at 6 months, I am very pleased with coral colors, lack of algae and stable water parameters. I also do WC monthly with a few extras when I noticed some minor problems, like the zoanthid masacre. I think it is too early for you at 2 months. Stay the course.

Try reducing your photoperiod in half. I actually went down to 4 hrs a day and gradually increased the photoperiod.

Which I finally traced it down to being my fault. I had two colonies that I tried to frag with a scapel. I did a poor job and lysed many polyps in the process of obtaining a few frags from the center of those colonies. This is the first time I have attempted this way of fragging and it will be my last. I will stick to just clipping off small chunks of the rock with zoos attached already.

The two colonies that I fragged were the first to croak. Then others started to die from a white fungus that would spread. When I noticed somthing looked a bit odd on the zoos, I would wake up to find them all dead the next day. This infection spread fast. I finally removed them all after several losses in a weeks time and treated them with a concentrated solution of Tetracycline. I then moved them to a Prop tank for recovery. Most survived, but a few look bad. This happened about three weeks ago.

I thought the prodibio got rid of algas that's why IMn so confused.IMO it.s the po4 that's in thye tank but doesn't show on the test as Reef-Daddy was saying.

I use the salifert tests too. My next investment will be the po4 photometer, so I will try this out and report back.

However, prodibio and other probiotics are not magic recipes. IME it does take time to establish the bacterial colonies and see results. Other products seem to work faster, like zeovit because they are stronger products, but people have had problems with using them. I think the slow and steady method is nice and maybe safer for some people.

I'M useing Salifert.
Do you use the GFO all the time?

Yes since I added a Ca reactor to the tank I've been running GFO passively in the sump. However that just part of the scheme. My tank is bare bottom with tons of flow, a large skimmer( 2 actually), I do 20% monthly W/C in 5 gallon incriments via skimming wet and bi weekly vacuuming. To me running GFO is like insurance.

Update:

Seems my problem since my last update on 10/6 were due to high salinity and switching salts. I corrected that and my tank has been back on Prodibio for 3 weeks now. I have 0 PO4 on a Hanna Colormeter and I am feeding like crazy to get a low PO4 reading around .01-.03. I do have Nitrates and I want these numbers balanced as I think it will help the bacteria do its thing.

i been using bioclean now for couple months and i get a green slime algea on my front glass..anyone else experience this? its a nano with 24 gallons totla water volume and i followed reconmendations from robs site for dosing..1 vial of each every 2 weeks

I think I've got a bacteria bloom after my second dose. I think between turning off the UV and dosing the Prodi its caused the bloom. The water is a little cloudy, with a whitist tinge. I wonder if I should fire up the UV for a few hours or stay the course? Thoughts?

Hold, unless the corals look bad. They will consume the bacteria as food. One of the benefits to this system.

Hey Reef Daddy,

I do a lot of reef related internet surfing and I have a couple of questions for you. First, I was wondering if this white water occured close to your Magnesium Cholride additive? Just a thought I had.

Secondly, I saw your great pic of the prostrata in the SPS forum but I noticed that ya had little to no polyp extension. I was wondering if this is common or recent. Thanks. :)
