Profilux 3ex firmware upgrade.

I've been searching for at least an hour now and the firmware upgrade guide is evading me like a true ninja.
Can someone please provide a link.

I think I'll have a go this Sunday.
I'm pretty sure it will render the unit useless so an early morning start would be wise.

Why does such a simple task have to be such a big thing?

It should not be, please follow there download instructions on either support forum, it is a very simple process, you only get into trouble in two ways

1. Unstable USB connection
2. Did not follow onscreen prompt and clicked ok on software prior to accepting download on controller (this is advised in a big warning box on download)

Hope that helps if not please join our forum linked in my signature for more support.

Thanks for your comment. It's nice to know there is help out there when you need it.
The update came through in the end, but it was stressful because failed updates seem to happen quite often and frustrating because adequate update information is not to be found.

I work with small, processor driven equipment all day and I have only once seen worse documents than those that come with the Profilux. The grammar is only a very small part of it. It's the tendency in the manuals to state the obvious and leave out what the reader really needs to know. What can be done in a minute can take hours because of this.

Since I've got years of experience with these devices I can tell you they can rise or fall on the manuals alone.
Here we have a seemingly very good product with poor instructions so a proper remake is in order in my opinion.
That would for sure be the cheapest and fastest way to make the Profilux a better product.

Do take this as a friendly feedback.

Hi

ALL info is out there on both support forums,if you are looking on RC for support of course you will not find the info as it is not a support driven forum.

If you go to www.profiluxsupport.com you will find a growing library of tutorial videos and also links to all the firmware and how to's for that. Most the info there is replicated on the European support forum www.aquariumcomputer.com

In regards to manuals, since ProfiLux functionality changes nearly monthly a manual is impractical, however the base tutorial videos available bridge this gap and more.

There is an informative sticky at the top of this forum in regards to where to always get the correct support and info also.

Hope that helps

Sorry AQD but I don't by that.

DNA, I feel your pain. Outside of the USA/Canada, and for non-German speakers, support is next to useless. There is much that I would like to do with my P3e but cannot find an understandable text that sets out the functionality of the product in simple English. The international support forum English version is nothing more than a poor Google translate template ... despite my family being originally German speaking, I cannot fathom things out in either language.

I cannot see why manuals cannot be adequately written and updated in e-versions ... that HAS to be a giant leap forward from wasting paper on the hugely out of date paper versions that are stuffed into the product boxes.

Who will pay for those constant re writes? Happy to recommend that the cost is added to the cost of the product. ;)

The way forward is video and forum tutorials we are actively doing right now that take little time and easily edited.

The international support forum is in English, there is no Google translate so unless of course you are not scrolling down to the dedicated 100% English section I do not see any issue.

We are also happy for our ANY user to use the NA support forum for resource also where you will find the tutorials.

I think there is way more product support and info available for ProfiLux now than any other controller on the market, if you cant figure something out just ask, I am sure you will get an answer (other than on RC) within a few hours. Why should we put so much dedication into direct support channels then spend so much time on manuals that need constant updates and users still will ask the same questions.

For me making the product support more human is way better at promoting client care towards a product, than a manual that no matter how written someone will not understand somewhere.

Tony I have to respectfully disagree with you here. The ENGLISH version of the International Support forum has been a great resource for me since I first purchased a ProfiLux a few years back. On occasion there are some "misunderstandings" because sometimes it's hard to get "True" emotion from typed test and Germans are known to be more blunt/frank. Other than that I have never not found an answer to one of my MANY questions.

With the advent of the North American Support forum it just became more "Local" so those helping are closer to their customers Time Zone. I for one have spent countless hours on both forums both getting help and giving help and I can tell you it's rare a question isn't answered fully in a timely manner.

Re: Manuals - It's a VERY time consuming endeavor to try and convert the "Roughly" translated German/Engineering terms into simplistic English. I know because I've done it on several chapters from the manual and when it was said and done guess what users kept asking for.... "Video Manuals". That's right.. I literally spent days and days converting the user manual into a more understandable version and all people asked for were Video Manuals. When I saw this outcome I stopped re-doing the manuals since it was obviously a total waste of time. IMHO the Video Manuals are exactly what the majority of users were asking for there for I hope this trend continues and more are created.

I do understand your frustration with the manuals but with the 2 support forums as well as a wealth of information stored here on RC it's a lot easier to find your solutions day and night.

Can I ask what happened to version 6 of Profilux software that was promised to us over 1 year ago? I'm still using 5.xx ... very disappointing...

This was well documented over several posts this year and last year. Please do a search on this forum save me re-posting again, thanks

Without going into too much detail...

Ver6 had some issues and while in development it came to light that instead of a PC based GUI more and more people are looking for remote access type of interface (browser based, Ap based and maybe something even better yet to come out). So instead of continuing to work on something that was "buggy" and something that wasn't inline with what more people wanted Ver6 was taken off the test bench and now GHL is working on something else that's supposed to be even better.

That's merely my "Take" on what happened. I was on the Ver6 BETA team when it was scraped.

By the way I find the most recent 5.x version of Profilux control quite decent though it could use some improvements, but my biggest issue with it is the small fixed size window. I could fit more than 6 of those on my screen, the maximize button is grayed out and I have not found a way to resize it as promissed.

Hi James,

the window of ProfiLuxControl II Version 4.xx is not resizable.
But this problem will be solved in 5.00.
Now we are finalizing 4.08, the next version will be 5.00

I do agree in that I'd like to see the Window MAXIMIZED! I will add that to my "Wish List" on the support forum now.

Alan, please don't interpret this as a negative response, there are things that need to be said ... and I am positive that there are a great many Profilux users that feel disaffected. :deadhorse:

The product demands the big bucks so is already expensive enough for proper attention to managing manuals ... paper, e-versions, or video. Your new dedicated NA support forum is excellent but it reads as though non-NA users are not particularly welcome to participate on an equal footing ... am I mistaken in this belief ? Registration requirements ?

The international support forum is in English, there is no Google translate so unless of course you are not scrolling down to the dedicated 100% English section I do not see any issue.

The international support forum that I bring up on my screen is a scroll down from the German version and the limited content is complete with the nuances of the German language ... leading me to believe that GHL responses are Google translates. No to mention the snarky comments from the support group ... remember that I am from a German family so I'm right up there with the culture. In fact, it would appear that nobody bothers to go there much any longer, there's been nothing new for months.

We are also happy for our ANY user to use the NA support forum for resource also where you will find the tutorials.

Thank you for that but refer to my comment above, please.

Any response to this question would be welcomed [ http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2133159 ]... it has sat there with zero response for quite some time. Well constructed 'operational training devices' are an excellent medium for focussing direct support channels ... used by all of the major software manufacturers.

For me making the product support more human is way better at promoting client care towards a product, than a manual that no matter how written someone will not understand somewhere.

Great, I'm not really fussed how it is conveyed ... NA is the first positive step in a long overdue initiative that Germany should have had in place to support its products and explain its adaptations. The product is capable of so much but poor communication on adaptation of its capability is a source of so much angst for users that are not neurologically wound in the same ways as the product gurus.

I don't disagree with you Allen ... proper English versions of the manuals with proper explanation of the adaptations of the product should have been available many years ago. Unfortunately, I'm not from the 'video' generation ... 'oldskool', if I understand the thinking behind the product then I can work it out for myself with the odd prompt, so I don't mind reading logical texts. Reading a paragraph over a few times is much easier than rewinding and running a video a few times.

The English version of the international forum is 100% English no google translate required, this still surprises me people cant find the English version, please use the side bar tab for scrolling a web page to locate it or better still here is a direct link

http://forum.aquariumcomputer.com/forumdisplay.php?3-English

The English forum is in English no Google translate required.

Putting that aside, I am not getting into some long winded reply over all this that has been covered in depth in a few threads lately. However if you do still have cause for concern please email GHL directly where they will actually see your concerns.

In the meantime please feel free to sign up to our North American support forum we are happy for you to do so, this is owned and operated by me not GHL. There you will see I have been hard at work making tutorial videos.

Please note this is my own initiative and not run by GHL, this helps take huge weight off of their shoulders so they can concentrate on product development.
