Project External Glass Overflow

No photoshop, just an LED ultraviolet light. Hitchiker coral.

This design IMO is the best of all drains. It's extremely efficient and low profile. Howevver, I can't devote that much time to glass cutting. Please tell us how many hours it took for you to dremel all that glass.

Took me 5 hours to cut the slots. Half hour to an hour to cut the two holes I think. I forgot it took that long, I had to go back to the first post to get the info LOL. Anyways it was time well spent. Sorry you dont have the time. Maybe you could cut one big slot out and put in a piece of acrylic with the teeth cut out in it. This would cut down on the glass cutting time tremendously. HTH

If you're worried about the structural integrity, add a piece of glass bracing just like Tunjee did and that should give more than enough support to the back panel for a canopy.

Just an update,
I took the top frame off of my 20H and cut a single wier-type slot along the back. I figured that I can always add acrylic teeth or even eggcrate later if I need. It actually went a lot faster than I expected, the whole process took only half an hour. I did it outside with a garden hose running over the surface. After getting a feel for the dremmel I had no concerns about cracking the glass but I think I may have shortened the life of the bit by going that fast. I've just attached the overflow box to the back and am ready to order my lights from DIYreef. Thanks for the excellent advice in this thread. In my opinion this is the best way to put an overflow in a nano!

Has anyone had any problems with this process? How easy is to to crack the glass or otherwise ruin a tank? What is the success rate?

No problems with the procedure. Glass can crack and needs to be handled like it's well... glass. You know it's fragile but you can carve out some serious glass with a dremel. Just keep the water flowing. I've had 100% success but I've only done one tank.

Just went with the wier type overflow becuase Im not a very patient guy. I put the router attachment on the dremmel and clamped a board on the back of the tank. I was able to just slide the dremmel along the board and get a pretty straight cut. Like Tunjee said, I will probably need to make some teeth out of acrylic to keep critters from going over the side.

on stand

on stand

Im putting a 20L underneath as a sump/fuge. Im a little bummed because I just realized that my AC remora pro is too tall to fit inside. I wouldn't have enough room to remove the collection cup. Any ideas? I'd hate to give up that skimmer put it's either that or have my father-in-law build me a whole new stand 2 inches taller.

 Excellent craftsmanship ninjafish. Router kit and a straight edge has paid off nicely. Smart thinking curved cuts on the internal up cut edges therefore no right angles. Less chance to develope a weak point which would lead to a crack. Fan freakin tastic. :D

I have an issue with my set up. It has to do with open top. This morning I found a snail on the OUTSIDE of the tank wall half way down. This is'nt the first time eithier hehe, snails dont seem to mind though. I just slide them up the glass and back into the water. I might have to do a 1" wide strip of glass all the way around the inside of the tank instead of just the back wall. They dont climb over the back wall so this is why I think it would solve the problem.

Added a pinpoint PH monitor. Mesh guards on all pump intakes. Cooling fan. Ranco controller on the way, dual stage. Gadgets are taking over my stand and it's a losing battle. Must... orga..nize..some...how.

Tunjee,
Looking good dude. That tanks been my inspiration all along.
I like the story about the snail... those little guys are motivated! Maybe they think they'll reach the ocean if they could just make it down off your stand.

One gallon would be my estimate off the top of my head. Dam top off system, no way to tell without doing some testing/modification.
