they like the water pristine not unlike sps. Just becasue they can tolerate dirtier water doesnt mean they prefer it nor will they thrive more in it than perfect water.

They like nutrients in the water....again, not unlike sps. Feed the tank all your system can handle and get it out before it rots is the name of the game.

You can certainly keep your pristine water while still feeding the tank what it needs fed

Please see my retraction and clarification above. I was transposing a discussion on uptake of nitrates by clams with this thread. What I meant to say was that they benefit from the same food fed to SPS... In the 50 nm size range...

Save for Paly's which in my experience will actually eat small pieces of what LPS will eat. I feed mine (when I feed them) (the paly's that is) pellet food as it seems to provide the best mix of nutrition when compared to things like pieces of mysid etc. Specifically Salifert Engery Plus pellets. Lately I do not feed often because I don't have the time and am trying to manage the growth I am getting as two joker colonies are now getting out of control and I am too chicken to frag them. I have found the same to be true with acans by the way. You can get 2-4 heads a month with a good feeding regimen. They grow like bloody weeds!

If you would like I can see about running a test tank at some point where one set of palys is fed with pellets, one with mysid, and one not at all. All under the same lighting and with good filtration to see what growth occurs. Might be an interesting write up in there and I do have a spare 10 gallon, 9002, carbon filter, and TEK 4 bulb...

Just purchased a Oceanic Biocube 29g protein skimmer. Now granted, it's not the best skimmer on the market, but I've never used a skimmer and don't even know how they do what they do, so I didn't want to over do it for my first one and not be able to set it up. I did all that stuff and now it's on. The little bubbles traveled up the tube and are now barely overflowing into the collection cup...but....how do I know if it's working?

It's been working overnight and I don't see much collecting in the cup save for a few debris but hardly noticeable at all. Is their something I'm not doing right?

just follow the directions on the skimmer, it will take a while to break in. take your time. if you haven't been skimming, i'm sure any skimmer you add will help.

But is it supposed to fill up with mostly water at the begining? I've followed the instructions and made it so it barely overflows but it changes and sometimes overflows more and fills up the cup overnight with just plain looking water.

You don't want the skimmer constantly pouring or even trickling water into the collection cup. The foam that it creates should be allowed to work itself up the neck of the skimmer into the collection cup. On the skimmer (or in the instructions) it should say what the desired water level is inside the skimmer.

During the break-in period, I adjust a skimmer to be as low on water as possible to keep it from flooding the cup all the time. You may find some benefit in lowering the water level below the recommended water level until the skimmer settles in.
