Protein Skimmer Question.

I would like your input on what the better choice of protein skimmers is for a 125 Gallon SPS dominated reef.
More to the point would you go with the AquaC EV-180 or an ETSS
skimmer?
Curious to why as well!
Thanks and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

Hi Wrassta,

We do not work with ETSS skimmers so cannot comment on how well it works from our own personal experience. However, from customers' feedbacks, they are known to be more finicky than others.

There are also other attributes of the Aqua C skimmer that makes it a 'better' skimmer than the ETSS:

1) Easier Installation. The outlet port is much higher on the EV180 than that on the ETSS. This is quite helpful as the outlet should be placed above the water level in the sump. The Aqua C will accommodate a much higher water level than the ETSS. If the skimmer is installed underneath the stand, you are much less likely to run in to clearance issues.

2) Better Efficiency. The Aqua C requires a smaller pump and is quieter than the ETSS. Downdraft skimmers are known to require very large pumps and they are loud. Being able to use a smaller pump (while not sacrificing performance) would mean a quieter, more tolerable, noise level, less electricity used and less heat added to the water. Especially for reef tanks, the reduced heat from the smaller pump is a real plus.

3) Easier to Clean. The Aqua C's collection cup twists and lifts right off. Removing the collection cup takes just a few seconds. On the ETSS, there are over 10 screws that you need to remove to be able to clean to collection cup. If you are anything like me, anything that is difficult to clean is rarely cleaned:p When the skimmer is dirty, you will lose performance. If the space is tight underneath the stand, it can be a real pain trying to remove all the screws to remove a collection cup (speaking from personal experience).

4) More Flexibility. The Aqua C can be upgraded to include a John Guest fitting that can be used to run ozone, or a calcium reactor. On the ETSS skimmer, it would be more difficult to accomplish.

5) Better Customer Service. I am sure the guys on the board would agree that Aqua C has one of the best customer service amongst the manufacturers. This is definitely helpful if you have any questions or require any support.

For a 125, either skimmer would do a great job skimming the tank. You should be very happy with either skimmer. However, we think you will be happier with an EV-180 due to the reasons listed above:D

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,
Joseph

Thanks Delta.
I had read some stuff that made me question which skimmer technology was best for SPS dominated reef tanks.
It sounds like the Aqua C folks have a great design with the spray injection technology and other "convenience" perks.
I think it will be a tougher project to figure out what the best Ca reactor is!
Appreciated the pics!
