protein skimmer

So my Seaclone 150 started leaking at the bottom conection today - just out of nowhere - tinkered with it quited a bit - still wont stop leaking. Since it looks as if I will be needing a new protein skimmer what do you guys suggest. Couldnt really find anything on the drs site or petsolutions other than the seaclone. i have a 75 gallon no sump so Im looking for the HOB variety - however I would much rather have a HOB that could be used in a sump later down the road. With a 120 or 180 in mind down the road - a powerful skimmer interests me !

put some teflon tape around the O-rings it will stop.just rap it around a couple of times around the fittings.

When you move into the 120 or 18- range, in sump or inline skimmers are the way to go. For now I would look up the Octopus or MSX lines of HOB. AquaC and Corallife also are good but IMHO not in the same class as octo and MSX.

The MSX and Octo are $$$$ skimmers the corallife is a good skimmer but i would mod the return to help with bubbles or run in a sump.Never had a AquaC I hear alot of good about them I think they are in sump only and are $$.

+ 1 on this post. I am using the msx250 and it does a fantastic job.

If going to a 120 gal then look at the total water column--sump refugiums ect.
In my eg I have a 110 but a 60 gal sump, a 40 gal refugium and a 30 gal refugium(remote dsb) so I am probably over 200 gal in total water gals.

If you take the msx line of skimmers probably about 70 dollars differs between each skimmer you upgrade. However to get the lowest in the line you need 400 dollars.
So you are better to save up and invest once in the skimmer you will need rather then but out 200 dollars or so more into a new one for your existing system.

Let's take a step back and make sure you're choosing with the best goals in mind.

IMHO it's not realistic to buy a hang-on skimmer for a 75g and then expect it to work well as an in-sump skimmer for a 120 or 180 down the road. That's more or less twice the volume, for one thing - and, there are few high quality hang-on skimmers that will work on a large (i.e. 180g) tank with any effectiveness.

So if what you're really after is a skimmer that'll work well on your 75, then concentrate on that goal.

AquaC make good skimmers (available as hang on) for this size of tank, priced competitively against some of the other brands mentioned in this thread. The Remora would be a little overwhelmed if your 75g was stocked heavily, but a Remora Pro would be more than adequate. They're both very easy to use, effective, and not outrageously expensive. Plus, they've both been around (and been very popular) for a number of years, which means they're easy to find cheap on the used market.
