I agree, check your alkalinity. High or low alkalinity itself does not cause a xenia to not pulse. It's the sudden changes. If you had very low alk and did a large water change, they could stop pulsing for a few days, but they really are hard to kill (uh, unless you treat a few rocks with fluke tabs for acro flatties. Killed every xenia in my tank, even though I was careful to rinse every rock I treated first in sterile salt water, then in a quick fresh dip. Next day, no more xenia!
Anyway, to prove my point, at the time of my dipping, I had xenia like mad, pulsing away happily. My alk was around 1.5!!! I've since brought it up, and my hard corals are coloring up a little more.
