Pump from basement advice

I recently plumbed my auto-top off to the basement. I need to know what pump would work for a "top-off" situation. The pump wouldn't be constantly running, and I don't know if certain pumps are design to run constantly, or if it even makes a difference. My water has to move 12 feet up, and 5 feet laterally. there are no elbows, and I am using 1/2 vinyl tubing. I tried an old RIO 3100, and that did not work. What would be the most inexpensive way to get this done? Thanks

For a topoff you won't be moving much water and as such, any friction losses from the plumbing will be negligible as compared to the 12' of elevation you must overcome. I looked through the Marine Depot site at their pumps and it looks like a Mag 7 will get you 20 gph at 12'.

I know Mag pumps are very reliable when run continuously, however, I don't know about on/off operations.

I would go with a peristaltic pump like this for several reasons. First, they can take the head; second, they are made for intermittent use; third, they deliver the water in a slow drip should your float fail.

I have a 6.5 foot clearance and use a quiet one 3000 pump - 4000HH would work for your requirement. I've had the pump in for 2 years and no issues with the short on off cycles. I use a DYI setup found here. http://www.aquahub.com/store/diygaquarium.html

I have run a genx pump for the exact application you are trying to use if for. Never fails.

I know where to get a peristaltic pump cheap & local.

I have a head to go on it, but I was being selfish & keeping it to myself.

What do you have to trade for this "classified" info?
