Purchasing coral frags...

Well I just ordered 1 Pink Birdsnest Seriatopora Coral and 1 Acropora SPP. They both come on a little circular object thats as round as a quater id say. Is there any way when this arrives to remove it from that and put it on a desired LR?

As my SPS collection grows in size and number, I've become increasingly more paranoid about picking up some problem hitchhikers like red-bugs and flat worms. I posted in the SPS forum about quarantining SPS corals before adding them to my tank.

One of the best answers I received stated that they remove the coral from the disc, even clipping the butt end of the frag off, as this is where some problem parasites lay their eggs.

If you want to procede you can then treat the frag with Interceptor and TMPCC.

I agree. Clipping at the butt is best. If you dont have the tools try ebay for a frag kit. or your LFS. you can also use reg gel super glue for reattachment. the frag glue is a bit more pricey

yup, bust 'em off or if you're paranoid (and you should be) cut off the butt as mentioned above. Then attach them to your desired LR with gel super glue. Works like a charm.

Gel super glue? just the regular old stuff from the hardware store? God I love this site.

Is there any trick? I have a couple polyps/mushroom which are attached to small pieces of LR and have just been resting on top of my LR. So I just put some gel superglue on the LR piece, then stick it to my LR?

I just break off by hand, or if bigger I clip. I use epoxy--do not like super-glue, but I know it works.

I much prefer superglue for smaller frags, and yes it's the same stuff from the hardware store (get the gel kind, much easier to deal with than the runny stuff). Anything cyanoacrilyte (sp?) based (that's the active ingredient in super glue). I usually put a glob on the end of the frag, and then quickly dunk it in the water and place it where I want it in the rock. It will work underwater if you're quick, however it's more effective if you can take the rock out and let it dry for ~2-4 minutes before submerging the glue.

Great advice as I'm getting ready to go out and by my first sps. I just wonder, how come the super glue doesn't harm the coral? Can this be use with all types of corals?

I haven't run across a coral yet that super won't take work on. just be sure to wear gloves or at leasst keep it off your fingers or it will be you that gets glued to the rock...LOL
