Purchasing LEDs- advice needed

if you want to go razor. I would wait for the 36" model to come out. it'll cost less than 2 20" models and better coverage because of new lense. just my 2 cents. the razors are an awesome light for the money, but if you put it in a canopy, you wont have the coverage. you'll want to raise the fixture to about 8 to 10" above water line for better coverage.

Ok cool, haven't come across Hydra in my research, I'll check it out, thanks!

SneekaPeek- I'm definitely planning on hanging the fixture, awesome news that a 36" model is coming out. Any idea on a release date for that?

check out reef-builders website

supposedly 2 months after macna, but if your hanging the fixture. I would go with 2 20" models for more coverage.

I went with a photon48 from reefbreeders becauase I only wanted one fixture over my 75g mixed reef. Plus, I can grow whatever I want with these lights provided all my other parameters are all good. I plan to use these same lights when I upgrade to a 90 or 120.

I don't have any experience but a local fish store has them. They are really nice. I am looking at getting those. They fit my budget a little more than the maxspect but I do like the functions of the maxspect with having the storm setting and daylight to dual settings. They are really nice the fish store close to house has them just way too expert.dive for me

ya I'm thinking the TaoTronics are the way to go...If I didn't have to buy two maxspects I'd get them. Plus spending 850 dollars on lights means that every time I complain about being short on money I'll get a reminder from the girlfriend about the time I spent $850 dollars on lights for that "stupid fish tank" haha

I completely understand my wife stays on me about mine.. "your stupid fish cost too much, you spend to much time on that dumb fish tank."I am really thinking bout going with the Tao Tronics. I am looking at one that has dinner function and a timer/programmer on them.

ya man, I hear you. Not to mention the times I hear "you're on that stupid fish forum again aren't you" hahaha

Anyway...yes, I think the Tao Tronics are the most likely option for me at this point. I was actually hesitant at first because of how cheap they were, but they seem like good quality and the price point may just be because they use some cheaper materials and it's made in China. I think as long as you hang them a decent amount above the tank, the rust issues won't crop up

We'll see...I still may splurge and get the MaxSpect Razors :)

I understand. I went back and looked at the email from maxspect. They recommend the 160w for lps, soft coral on my 120 gallon tank. But suggested two 120w for sps majority tank. My tank is 48x24x24 120 gallon. I want a bigger tank but i would be in divorce court, by the next morning. So I am probably just gonna have to stay with 120 for awhile. I have ordered a wp-40 from a website called fish-street.com. It is a chinese company. I would recommend going and looking on their site they have some led fixtures that look identical to the maxspect. I have looked at them but haven't decided. I have read many good reviews about the wp-40 and ordering from there. So i decided to give it a try.

interesting...I'll check that website out. Agreed, one maxspect is definitely out of the question if I want to venture into SPS. Reading up in that Chinese LED thread too, lots of cool stuff there

After looking at LEDs forever....I just couldn't decide if I wanted LEDs or not.
I decided to go with 2x250w MH over the 120 I am building right now.
That is, until I figured out how HOT they run!!!!!

Started looking a LEDs again and I ordered a ReefBreeders Photon 48.
It will be here tomorrow.

Not sure what you don't like about them, but for the $ (and your budget) I'd suggest giving them another look.

Just my .02

Larz- reason I was hesitant on the reefbreeders was just because when I watched some youtube videos of tanks with them, the coloring didn't appeal to me as much as other lights but it might just be that lower quality cameras were used for those vids. I'm going to do some more research on them because they offer a price point that's in my range and they make a 48" light which is exactly what I need- don't want to have to get 2 lights.

Ocean- Saw those too, the problem is they only come in 27" or 60". I couldn't put two 27" side by side with my tank dimensions (48" long, 18" deep). So I'm looking at other options on that site because they have good prices

ya I can't afford 2 razor 120w, just out of the budget for someone months out of college haha....
So I'm thinking either the reefbreeders or 2 of these that a friend recommended:

Lex, how's the color on the photon48...I don't want anything super blue, are they adjustable?

The color is not blue UNLESS, you program them to be. They are completely adjustible/controlable. It has two channels: (Blue Channel & White Channel) which are adjustible from 0-100%. Both channels control a variety of different color/spectrum LED's so for example, the blue channels has a variety of blue colored LED's and the white channels has a variety of "white" colored LED's. I don't have both channels runing at 100% and probably never will as its wayyyy too bright but IMO at that ratio, the color looks very similar to my old Aquatinics T5 fixture which had a very popular bulb combination recommended to me by grim reefer, but just a lot brighter. I had kessils A150w prior to the reefbreeders and I like my photon 48 better. My preference has to do with the fact that I can control this light fixture and I love having moonlights. The new kessils 360's are awesome though.

Thanks for the details Lex, didn't know they were that controllable but that's awesome to know. Definitely considering them more strongly now...moonlights are sweet too
