Purigen anyone??

I have been using Purigen for many years on my mixed reefs. I had a concern about chemical warfare with the different varieties I keep. No problems with this, so my guess is it's working. I usually keep 5-6 bags of it in my sump & regenerate about every 4-6 weeks, which is where the savings come from with this product. No messy black powder everywhere either!

How do you regenerate Purigen?

How does the product work after regeneration? At what point does it require replacement?

I use GAC in hopes it will reduce chemical allelopathy, also. I've considered this Purigen in the past, but was unsure of it's effectiveness.

-And thanks.

The product is white. When it turns brown, I soak in bleach overnight until it's white again. Then I soak it again in dechlor, to remove any residual bleach. I've done this more than 3 times.

Is your refugium connected to both systems and is it 440 gallons??? Impressive size on the fuge that alone should keep your nutrients good..

The lighted refug is 440 gal.

I also have 450 gallons cyrptic with rock on a closed loop. 1000GPH off a mazzi injector for improved DO is the flow. You should see the pods and sponges. Also it was cheap just tossed in dry Marco Rock.

It really helps to have a 20x20 sump room. The extra water volume means no heater or chiller. Just keep the room at 78.

Also a custom euroreef skimmer with a reef flow needle wheel pump dosen't hurt.

its a gret product used it for years like a good grade of carbon also i like matrix by seachem its pea size water flows through it not around it like most carbon very clean also a simple rince before use is all it needs

Re: Purigen anyone??

i use it in my 29gallon and i think it is great in a nano system. it plus chaeto, plus weekly water change around 15% equals no need for Skimmer. good luck

I've been using Purigen for about 6 months. I keep a 500ml bag in the center section of a 25 micron Nu-Clear filter. I regenerate every couple of months.

I run Carbon and GFO in reactors.

I don't test for chemical changes, but I see a change in the color of the water (clearer) and number (fewer) of particulates in the water column when it's fresh.

Purigen is great filter medium, can be used together with or without carbon. I know many succesful aq what use it, and i alo use it few years now. It seems that purigen have greater affinity to organics than carbon, and also take much less micro elements out. Maybe synthetic media will be the future. Seachem claim that Purigen is superior to carbon in removing organic, but, at least for now, carbon have broader range of waste what remove, so maybe is good idea to use them both. And, if you put it directly on/or after skimmer outlet, it will last considerably longer..

I do not believe purigen has a greater affinity for organics than granulated activated carbon, nor do I think it takes our less trace elements. I think it takes out organics as granualated activated carbon does and may have an affinity for some that a different than carbon does and vice versa. I use them together.

It's supposed to change color, right? I mean, when it's used up. Has anyone ever had this happen? I used it some years back in a full blown setup packed full of stuff and never could get it to change color to let me know when it was exhausted, and time to recharge. One of the reasons I use poly filters now is because I know when those are toast.

I use it. Takes awhile for it to turn brownish in my reef but I've tossed it in my koi pond and it turns dark brown almost black in a day or two.

OK, mine didn't change at all in like 2 months. I ended up throwing it all out because I thought it was bunk. I wonder if the saltwater decreases it's efficiency/ability to adsorb/absorb.

I fluidized mine in a Phosban reactor (very low flow) and it turns brown in about 4 weeks. I have a very heavy load of fish and corals so that might have something to do with it.

I personally love Purigen.

Thats true, in dirtier water Purigen will much faster become depleted and turn black/brown. Sometimes i buy larger package with my friend and in his FO tank purigen from same package become dark brown in few weeks, while in mine sps tank last much longer, about few months...
