Purigen ?

I'm not new to the hobby, but I am brand new to using Purigen. I have a BioCube 29 HQI so I just bought the smallest container to try it out (100mL). That packaging came in a pouch instead of a bottle, with a single pre-bagged 100mL of Purigen. The directions say it treats up to 400 gallons.

Problem: My tank is only a 29, so should I cut their bag open and pour a small amount into one of my own media bags or just put the pre-packed bag into my media rack?

I should add that I laready put the whole bag, intact, in my tank because I didn't know what to do with it, but it's only been in there a few hours as of this post so I can take it out and cut it open if needed.

You're fine. I use those bags in my 46g all the time with no issues.

I've never understood what they mean with that "... treats up to 400g" statement. It's kind of like 2-part dosing solutions that say they treat "...up to XXX gallons". Well - that depends on how much cal/alk is being used by the corals, doesn't it?!

Purigen is an ion adsorption resin that sucks stuff up at a certain rate regardless of the tank size. I think they just mean that in theory it will last X months in a 400 gallon tank. However, it will foul up with bacteria long before that "X months" arrives so plan on swapping it out every month with another bag while you regenerate the other.

Eh don't really need two like the previous poster said. Going one day without it while you're refreshing is no big deal really.

I used it when I had my 14g biocube and modified it to have the InTank media basket in the middle chamber. I loved it and no, do not remove any of it from the bag. I never bought another bag of purigen, I just followed the instructions on how to renew it and never had an issue. I turned it over every month to get it to be used up evenly but every 4-6 months I renewed it since it says once its black then its exhausted but I did it when it turned brown and couldnt see anymore white. Im thinking of making a purigen reactor but since it is so fine, its kind of hard to make a reactor that is functional for it since if its not ment for it, it will just blow everything into your sump or tank.

depending on how you have the bag set up, it's kind of it's own reactor. if you put it in a bucket of water and pour in some water or move it around you'll see the purigen floats around pretty easily in it's bag. assuming some decent flow and that it isn't packet into your filter too tightly, it'll flow easily.

It can be used for any size tank realy. it works just like activated carbon. You can run 10 gallons of activated carbon on a 20 gallon tank if you had room for it somehow and it woudldn't hurt anything. most of it would jsut be extra, or it wouldn't be depleated so quickly. I run the 100ml bag on my 40galon, and have had it for about 5-6 months and stil haven't gone through half of it's usefull life because I also run carbon.
