Nice. That's the blue (or in your case purple) CB shrimp Stenopus tenuirostris. It's common throughout the Indo Pacific. Did you get it as a hitchhiker or buy it?

i bought it at Something Fishy for $15 :)

if you look closely , most of its head region is purple, but there is a small region in the middle that is solid blue. it looks like its the organs. its the small and peaceful version of the typical coral banded shrimp.

thanks for info. leslie. im trying to get another.

my fav. Stenopus, love the females, eggs are so blue. Now you just need to find a male. They are very well behaved when compared to other CBS (only because they stay small)

you'll be looking for the same color, but you'll need to compare the two sexes. Males have no purple in the carapace area. Females almost always have gonads present (purple stuff). If you put to males or two females in the same tank you'll have one shrimp if your lucky.

"(only because they stay small)"? How small?

I just bought two of them today. I pair! Had only seen them once before online and it just said they were rarer. Of course the LFS sales person told me they got to be the same size. But he also told me they had had them for 3-4 months in a reef tank hoping they were going to mate, but they weren't getting bigger fast enough so the owner said to sell them. They sure are a pair never get but 2 inches away from each other if they are being venturous.

Stenopus tenuirostris is the scientific name for sure?

They are much smaller, 50% less maybe more, my pairs have only gotten to be about 2" in lenght maybe. The name is correct. Goy described them in the 90's I think. You can tell the female apart by the extra deep blue/purple coloration (eggs).

Have you been able to raise any young? I knew right away which was the female. I'm glad I picked them up, I almost turned them down. I hope they survived the trip and acclimation well, they look ok.

do the yellow ones stay as small aswell? my lfs has a pair that are tiny, but for $208 (aussie shrimp prices suk) i left em there yesterday but ive been thinkin bout going back for them. lol they better hang out in a visable spot if i do get em for that much cash!

WOAH! Please don't. I don't know how much it cost to ship there, but I'm pretty sure you could get something shipped as cheap as that and then could have other stuff shipped with it. I've heard the yellows stay a little smaller then the normal colored ones, but have seen them at a good size.

mine hides alot. i ve contemplated getting another one but since i rarely see the one i have. i figured whats the point.

Gordonias - you laugh to hear that cleaner shrimp are commonly 180 - 190 bucks! there is a ban on the importing of invertebretes to protect the great barrier reef, so that makes lots of shrimp crazy crazy prices.

and yeh i bought a peppermint shrimp a week or so ago to control some aptasia and havent seen him once, he was just $40 so to drop 200 on a pair and not see anything would properly really annoy me!
