anyone had ph's melt? I'm new to this coral game but i know problems when i see them lol i have 3 polyps, one wont open at all one looks decent and one has half its skirt folded (or shriveling) in towards the mouth. Are they melting? any thing i can do??? You'll want parameters but it'll have to wait till tomorrow sorry guys. Its a 30 gallon reef i have a 4 bulb t-5 set-up they're on the bottom and little flow (the guy i purchased from had little flow and they looked amazing, he also ran metal halides the frag rack was half way down) Please help if you can.

I've had a lot of polyps look like this. did you just get them? it sometimes takes a while for them to acclimate and open fully. it also seems like the blues/purples generally like lower light, although if the guy you got these from had these under halides and with no shading I don't think you have to worry about that. If you just got them I'd give them some time. move them to different places with different flow/lighting and see if they respond. If you've had them for a week or so and they're still looking stressed then it's more likely your water parameters or some other factor.

Usually when mine melt, they look much worse almost from the start. Most all of mine that have done what your are doing survived just fine and are doing great. Just try to figure out what is going on then let me know 'cause I'm still not sure. LOL

i hear ya tate, this is my first time with "high end" zoas may be my last lol. I'm going to try to get some pics and i'm going to do a water change asap i'll keep you guys updated

Yep - I bought a single recently that melted in about three weeks. Not sure there is any truth to this, but I heard they do better if you frag them as doubles or triples. Don't know why that would make a difference, but I can say that all the Z&Ps in my tank and the new additions after my PH experience have done well. Just that one, and it just so happened to be the most I've ever paid for a single polyp. Imagine that.

i had some red hornets that looked really really bad when they first started opening and I thought the same thing; they are melting. It just took them a while to get use to my tank and now are 'large and in charge!' It took 12 days for them to open at all, then another 10 days to look healthy. Now there are 4 new heads in a month and a half, just be patient and maybe does a little absorbic acid.

if your ****ed about loosing PH's, I just lost a colony of mini colony of Red Hornets roughly 13 or so with a couple babies budding.

OUCH the red hornets would definitely be way more frustrating, BTW i took my purples and put them on the sand bed two of the 3 are open fully and look good the other one is starting to open, and the baby polyp looks like it wants to open.

If acclimated properly purple hornets can take a LOT of light, 4-5" from the waters surface and the halide(250watt w/4 T5s ) is just 3-4" from the waters surface.

yeah i don't think i acclimated them to the light properly but all is good now, the baby head is starting to open real good and it looks like i have another baby so in a month i'll have 5

My purple hornets went from 2 polyps to like 6 in a couple of weeks then they close up for a while, I was afraid that they were going to melt on me but I they came back stronger, now I have a mini colony, on my red hornets they have a very similar care as my purple hornets, I have them side by side about 10" from my 250 MH.

yeah female reefers i'm sorry but i believe my purples are females because they have no idea what they want lol i had to move them again BUT i think all is well now. They are now in high light higher flow ( i had them blocked from flow, i think maybe they got use to the lighting) i had them lower but they started stretching so i placed them higher. Look sweet now, boy this is never ending lol. I have a question for all you gurus if i can post a picture would you guys be able to tell me if another frag i have are PH?? this kid sold them to me as ph i believe they are blues or black hole suns. They have alternating colors on the skirts, but they're more blue and have lighter mouths. (can someone tell me how to upload also?)
