Purple Long Tantacle Anemone Care

Here is my green one in my BC29. This picture is a bit older and I have since removed the LPS just to make sure there was no harm done to them. But as I stated before the LTA, Maxi minis and the frilly mushroom all play good together.

Disregard the red arrows in the picture this was the only pic I had. I had used it in another post showing the Faux sandbed from the real sand bed. So the nem is sitting on a Faux sand bed but in a 3" deep plastic container full of sand.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that pic looks like a cleaner shrimp riding a seahare cruising across your LTA... Nice timing on that pic!

Here are some pictures of the nems that I took from my BlackBerry.
I should call it Orange LTA instead of Red LTA.
The nems are under four 39w T5s
I forgot to take pictures of their basese when I just got them.; their basese are bright red.

Thanks ClownNut. Do you have a picture of a Red (Rose) LTA in a reefer tank? I hope it will keep or getting better in term of color.

You know those are a newly found form of pest anemones? They are very toxic to your system. Currently I am the only authorized person to properly dispose of those so you will need to box them up and mail them to me for proper desposial.

I know they are beautiful but you have no other option.

This is a quick video of the two LTAs after 2 weeks in my holding tank.
They are under a 150w MH (10k)
It looks like their colors are fadding a little bit.

How did you get them to stqy put? I have tried burying them, foot next to rock, leaving it alone, powerheads off. Now its in a cave and wont com3 out im worried about it dont know what to do. Ive read a lot on them I may just remove it but I like it :\

what I did were turning the current and light to the minimum for a few hours.
Made a hold near a rock/tank wall and put the nems in, Once they were attached, I turned the current and light back.

If I could make any recommendation it would be to have a DSB. Otherwise, the anemone just moves around until one day it just lifts up and never settles again. I have 6" (I think).

This anemone is in a dedicated tank; just her and one (big, mean) clown. She's been under LED for about a year now but did better under MH. I'm not saying the LED isn't good, but she liked the MH better.

Its a beautiful specimen for sure. Ill try again I have like 5" did you have to dig it down or did it do it on it's own?

Update it's come out and pretty bleached so ill turn power heads on, on the other side of tank. Can I add fresh dry sand to the tank I still have 60 more pounds or should I cycle it?

Wow! you guys are making my green one look like an ugly duckling. Guess I am going to have to upgrade to a purple one.

You can add the sand you do not need to cycle it but you will most likely get a diatom bloom on the new sand. I would not cover your current tank sand with it. I would move your tank sand to one side of the tank and then add the new sand to the opposite maybe mixing a bit of the tank sand with the new sand to seed it.

If you are going to make a DSB 6"+ I would strongly recommend you research the application of a DSB in a marine aquarium. They require specialized care in themselves. I really see no need for a DSB to keep a LTA. 2 to 3 inches of sand is plenty.

If it was me and you are finally seeing the LTA come out just wait before adding more sand. Try and feed it a small meaty type food. If it takes it in and does not spit it back out over the next 24 hrs you should be good to go. If the LTA will accept food some bleaching is not a big concern it will regain its color once it starts feeding that is if you have it under adequate lighting.

I moved my green LTA out of my BC29 Saturday and put it into my 135. I simply buried its foot into about 2-3 inches of sand with it backed up against my rock scape. AGAIN!!! with the moderate tank current flowing into the oral disc. I really think this is one key to make them happy to stay put. It has not move at all and is fully open, eating and happy. I moved it from a under a 150 w MH 20" from the light to LED's. The LTA is probably 30" from the LED's counting the tank depth in my 135g.

Be patient. Nems can be finicky. One day they are out in full glory and the next day all shriveled up and looking PO'ed. Just to come out the next day in full glory again.

I hate joining the "advice" train because you end up getting a million different opinions and you end up trying them all and it just makes things worse. So I reluctantly recommend you do nothing. Don't try to bury it, don't try to feed it. Just reduce the water flow to allow it to settle and grab onto the rock on its own. Once it does that put the flow back to normal and it will "walk" until it finds the sand and buries itself. It may even hide in the rockwork for a while. Eventually it works out. It will find where it wants to go and that's where it will go. There is nothing you can do.

My anemone was a centre-piece - who decided to live at the side of my tank ... I guess she's more of a "side-piece" now. She used to be in the centre for a while, then moved, then came back, then one day moved to the side and has been there since. Just like children and pets, they have their own personalities. I just deal with it.
