Purple/Magenta Dottyback

Grizzled & Cynical
Haven't kept one of these for many, many years. What's the prevailing wisdom of adding one of these to an existing fish population? I've had issues with the splendid, but I simply don't recall how aggressive the magenta is. Most of my fish will not be a problem, but I do have a trio of chalk basslets and some leopard wrasses.

From my research, the purple gets quite aggressive. I was research this just a few weeks ago. Based on what I read, I got an orchid dottyback. A little more expensive, but supposedly much less mean.

I would say the orchid is doing well in my tank - he comes out for about 2-3 seconds a day...to grab some food and then return to his hiding spot.... :)

Strawberry Dottybacks are hell on wheels, but Orchid dottybacks have nicer color, tank bred and not aggressive. I always keep them in pairs but in the wild they live in harems with 1 males and a number of females. They are protogyny hermaphrodites so any two young will pair up with the dominate become male.
