purple monster getting too big?

my frag has grown nicely into a mini colony and I recalled reading about the purple monster mysteriously necrosing when it became larger. does anybody have success or problems keeping bigger colonies? pics are welcome.
thanks

I have heard about this as well. Some speculate that flow issues might be the culprit. Other things as well but they are not popping into my mind. A picture of your colony would be great. My mini colony is just that...still kind of mini but I am keeping a close eye on it regardless as it is 10-15 branches.

here's mine from a few months ago, it's bigger now:

i just aquired a frag at our monthly meeting that was brought to us buy eddie hanson/s tyree for our april monthly, after that they had a auction of le and such,it is supposed to be one that eddie found and believes it may be a 2nd generation of the pm,he said its a least a lokani, which it could be,just to let it color up and see,its light purple now under 14k phoenix 250de,ill try and post some picts for input, how slow do they grow, all my other le and such grow pretty well,mikid:eek2:

My little crumb cruncher is doing nicely, prominently displayed in the center of the tank about 10" below a 250W 20K XM :)

I wonder if the tight growth pattern, along with the historically slow growth rate is the reason for this?

Say the flow is low and some localized STN occurs, given the growth rate, it would be hard to recover once this starts.

A tightly growing piece like a birdsnest tends to be a quicker grower.

Watcha think?

Sweet looking piece!!!

Frag a peice if you are worried... If the coral crashes you will have another colony....

awsum coral... I am surprised since this coral is one of the first coral Tyree started selling that it has remain this popular for this long.

Nice pics. PM is one of my favorit sps. Where are you guys keeping you PM. Very high light and very high flow is where the PM does best correct?

Sad day... My purple monster has succumb to the mysterious RTN issues. The colony had grown to 6 x 3" and was deep purple (the best color I have been able to to get from it). It has been unhappy since the tank move in January 2010. STN started in Feb from the bottom and I figured it was due to low light and flow because of new placement. So I moved the colony to higher light and flow and the STN at the base nearly stopped, but there was no polyp extension for the last 3 months (even at night).

Then last night i discovered RTN from the top branches and had to hack up the whole colony to try and save it! It was painful pushing that beautiful colony through a bandsaw :(

Thanks! Unfortunately ALL the frags I made RTNd. There were 20+ of different sizes in different parts of the tank.
