Purple Tang Shortage?

Might pick up a local one at a LFS that is 4".

A little bigger than I wanted, but seems super healthy and they've had him for 5 months.

Would it be ok if my Yellow is 3.5-4" and my Black will be around 3-4" to put in with a 4" Purple at the same time after QT? (Aggression Issues)

When you are done with quarantine of the black and purple, I would take the yellow out of your tank for a week to ten days and rearrange the rock somewhat to break up the yellow's territory, and then add all 3 tangs at once. I also would tape a couple of mirrors to the tank at opposite ends to distract the fish. You have a lot of room in your tank for the fish to spread out.

Yellow isn't in the display :)

One a small Tomini Tang and 3 Pajama Cardinals.

After this next batch of quarantine I'll be moving the following in all at one time:
Yellow Tang
Purple Tang
Black Tang
Chevron Tang
Yellow Bellied Blue Tang
Black Ice Clown
Flame Wrasse Pair
Potters Angel
Flame Angel

Hopefully enough going in to cause mass confusion and not much aggression :)

That seems like an awful lot of fish to add at one time. I would be worried about the bio-load and causing a mini cycle. I personaly would add the wrasses, clowns and two angels, wait two weeks while checking parameters. Then add the Chevron and yellow belly if parameters stayed good, wait two weeks after these guys and then add the other three tangs, checking parameters all along the way.

Not a bad idea :)

Thanks I'll do that. The clown and yellow bellied blue I've had for years. I don't think they even need to wait. I might just run Prazi twice to be safe.

The Wrasses and Angels are good ones to add first. Tangs can wait a bit.

Just got my beautiful 3" Purple Tang from Michael at NYAquatic.

http://www.nyaquatic.com/

He's in a darkened quarantine tank right now.

One happened to pop up on their site early Sunday and a grabbed it. They only had 4-5" before, which was larger than I wanted to start with a Purple.

During this search I did find a perfect fat Purple at a LFS. Two problems, he was a trade for being aggressive and had been in a large tank at their store for months, but had just had fish with ICH introduced to that tank. I had to pass.

Also found 3 at Petco when going to inquire about having one ordered. Naturally I wouldn't buy one from the store displays (HLLE on all of them). They said they could order, but I just felt bad buying from them.

So glad one came around in the size I wanted from Michael :)

Having a little bit of a time getting my Black Tang. Seems to be a bit of a shortage now, but should be this week or next. :fingers crossed:

I'll try to get a picture later of the little Purple in QT :)

Pacific East Aquaculture has "several" black tangs in the 4 - 5" range according to their website. $500

Here he is picking at some live rock I threw into the QT tank (Spying with a network cam):

Fwiw I've had good luck with PEA, but the no guarantee part sucks.

Pacific island aquatics is where I got my black, they have a really nice 4" at the moment.

Even for DOA?

That sucks, no way I'd chance that. Just had a wrasse show up DOA yesterday... Go thing it was only $16 and the company refunded it anyway.

Not chancing that on $550.

They cover DOA, just no 14 day like we are all used to. Also, check the feedback forums for PEA, they are very well reviewed. I received a white tail bristletooth from them last week that is doing great. They shipped him in a gallon of water with heat backs and a fully insulated box, and called later that day to make sure everything went well. He is very healthy and not skinny at all, took prepared foods the day after he arrived. I had to email them a couple of times, and always heard back within 20 minutes and got a detailed, custom response.

Pacific island has a 7 day, which was plenty for me. The fish are shipped direct from Hawaii and skip sitting at a wholesaler, which I really like. The pricing is really reasonable as well, compared to normal retail. I've also had good correspondence with Kevin there. If it was me, I'd order from PIA just because of that extra bit of guarantee they offer.
