Purple Up or Down?

Does anyone have experience with this product called Purple Up? I'm getting ready to cure my rock and wondered if it would help or not.. hence the Up or Down, heheh :)

Yes, it works but does get expensive. I would recommend dosing Kalk or pickle lime since it will keep your calcium stable and you'll get the same amount of coraline growth.

Iused it and wasn't happy. As long as ur Ca/ALK levels are stable and high, there will be no need for Purple Up,If you use it, monitor the CA level, and adjust ur Alk accordingly,

Its all Calcium Carbonate, and if not in sync with ur Alk Levels, ur won't get any Coraline

I started dosing a 2 part supplement for my nano's, weekly waterchanges, and now MY GLASS wishes i never had coraline, thetank is 6 months, 29 gallon

This is a hobby inundated with products that are long on marketing hype and short on delivery .. purple up is just one of many. Believe it or not ... there will be a day in the future when you will wonder how to get rid or coralline algae.

Purple down... just keep your ca and alk levels where they should be at and you will notice a difference quickly

I haven't seen any evidence that Purple Up does anything useful. Its primary ingredient is basically very fine sand. I'd avoid it, since it contains some other ingredients, like Sr, I believe, that I wouldn't dose.

purple up does work but i find that it also depletes the magnesium in your tank. so i supplyment with different cal. purple up will give it a boost on new tanks

i use natural sea water so i didn't need it. this is what the bottle says.

Purple Up does not contain coralline algae. Some living coralline algae must already be living on rocks or aquarium glass.

High dissolved phosphate levels inhibit the growth of coralline algae (and corals) and favors the growth of nuisance algaes. Check phosphate levels and use Phos-buster or other products to lower phosphate levels if necessary.

Carbonate harness levels should be maintained at natural seawater levels 2-2.5 meg/L or higher.

High nitrogeneous waste levels encourage nuisance algae growth, keep nitrogenous wast levels in check.

Keep pH in the range of normal seawater (8.2)

Light spectrum in the range of 5500K or higher favors the growth of coralline algae.

Grazing animals such as snails, tangs, and reef friendly hermit crabs encourage coralline algae by consuming competing fast growing nuisance algaes.

Coralline algaes have a life cycle that determines the speed of formation of new colonies. Different species of coralline algaes may grow at different rates. It is not unusual to take several months for pink and purple coralline algaes to reach rapid growth rates.

I had no problem growing coraline, and I didn't dose anything for almost the first year I owned my tank. My calcium levels were seldom higher than 350, and alkalinity usually around 2.0 meq/L. . .definitely in the low range of acceptable. I think the real secret is getting good base rock that has some established coraline growth. The rock doesn't have to be covered in the stuff, but shouldn't be bone white either. It takes time, though, so be patient. It was about 4-5 months before my coraline growth took off, but once it did, it was covering everything.

I'm also highly suspect of the effectiveness of Purple Up by the way. There are quite a few people who swear by it, though.
