Putting together my "future" 75 AGA RR (progress)

I have about three of those mushrooms. Gorgeous, aren't they? I'm going to fill my 2g cube with Blue Striped and Green Striped Mushrooms

It sounds like you're doing okay so far. i'll refrain from saying that ;) Becareful with those SPS if you have a tank that has hair algae. The hair algae is an indicator that there are nutrients in the system; nutrients that usually don't do so well for Acropora.

OMG that mushroom is beautiful......

Thank you very much. :) Believe it or not, when I got it, I got 2 of them, but the second one was 1/4th of the size of the bigger one. I had SO much flow in my tank that the littler one was washed away, and I could never find it. Well - I found it, and it had quadrupled in size. :eek2: It's deep within the rocks, but it's there, and has caught up in size to the one pictured.

Hey Wendy!

Everything is still looking awesome!

I was wondering how you like your sump so far? I'm thinking about doing exactly the same design as you.

Do you think you could take a picture for me when you get a chance? I'm going to be picking up my tank on Sunday from a coworker! :)

Hey Wendy, I dug up a picture of my Blue Striped Mushroom for you
BlueStripedMushroom.jpg

Brandon, will do. Give me a few minutes to take the pic, upload, etc. :) I am REALLY, really happy with the sump. It's working great.

Travis, I LOVE that mushroom. The colors are so intense, I've never seen Crayons or other coloring devices capture colors like that.

Travis, how do I get rid of those "extra" nutrients? Should I manually remove the rocks (the ones I can) and scrub off the hair algae? It has gotten better since I added Phosband and 20 more assorted snails. But the last thing I want is to lose those pretty SPS. I've noticed the Neon Green Acro is already putting out branch tips, and it's only been in the tank since Monday.

   ROFLMAO

I needed that laugh. Badly!

This is about the stage in your tank's life that you can expect some nuisance algae to pop up. It's inevitable. But, you can keep the process under control with hefty, regularly scheduled water changes, watching how much you feed, flow, etc.

Brandon,

For you:

(It was hard taking pictures because I can't capture the whole kit-and-kaboodle. If you need me to take more, I'd be happy to.)

Ditto. Thanks, Travis. :)

I am doing weekly water changes of 10% currently, with premixed, aerated water (RO/DI of course). Should I change more/more frequently?

WOW! That was fast! :D

Thanks so much. I think I'm going to do one like yours instead of putting the return and the middle flanked by the refugium and skimmer sections.

Do you have any problems with too much flow in the refugium or is there no such thing?

I would suggest about 20% weekly for a brief period, or until you start to see a decrease. This is the most critical time for most aquarists that will either make or break them. If you can't manage to keep up with the nutrients, then you'll lose the battle. Perserverance is priceless at this point. Just be diligent and patient, and you should come out on top in a month or so.

Brandon,
I'm not gonna lie to you - the flow is STRONG. The intial grape caulpera I got was flying all over the place until I anchored it. By that time I had lost most of it into the display. :( A friend of mine gave me different caulpera and it is THRIVING big time. I swear it has doubled since I put it in there 2 weeks ago. From what I've read "Cheato" would do fantastic in my refugium as well, as it would be tumbled around non-stop, and Cheato loves that.

Travis,
I won't be broken - ahem...I mean I won't relent with my water changes. (<-- was that proper English?) Tomorrow is my scheduled water change day, and I have enough pre-made to do a 20% easily. I always make extra, in case of an emergency. ;) I am honestly trying to stay on top of things, especially since I'm aware I've proceeded too quickly. Nothing will be added for a while, at least until I have this algae thing in control.

I am also relentless with changing the filter sock and the skimmer collection cup as I've read that's important of helping the algae to subside. I am afraid of adding too many more snails, as eventually the algae will be gone (not soon enough), and then they'll have no food.

Travis, as always, your input is very, VERY much appreciated. :)

windy. It looks great. I was hoping you would update soon. Mine is plumbed and now checking for leaks. The ro water goes in this weekend as well as the salt. Gona get my rock next week. I can understand how the excitement builds once the tank is up in a stand and plumbed. I need to keep the "patience" I aquired over the past six months. Keep the updates coming. Im living vicariously through you and your tank!

Did you do a thread about your tank that you could possibly link me to? :D How excited are you?

You asked about the hair algae. Every day I see an improvement, my snails and such are extremely busy all night long. There is nothing "special" I will do about it, other than doing the 20% water changes weekly as recommended by Travis, keeping up with emptying the collection cup of the skimmer daily, changing the filter sock every 2 days, and keeping the glass scrubbed. I am confident that over time it'll be gone, and hopefully coraline will begin to grow in its place. :)

I appologize for mis-spelling your name:hmm3:. Thanks for the info. I will work on the pics and thread this weekend.

Did you pre fill your tank to check for leaks or just start up with the "good" water and salt?

Also, what was the reason for the filter sock? Is it attached to your drain pipe?

Thanks for the updates. The tank rocks!

That's really about the only thing that you can do. For those that try to find different methods such as adding a Sea Hare or Lettuce Nudibranch, you're not actually fixing what is causing the algae. The key is to get rid of the nutrients, and the algae will starve out. When the algae starts dying, and even while it's thriving, if you manually remove as much as you can, you are effectively taking nutrients out of your tank by hand. You gotta remember that all nutrients are are simply decomposed matter. Algae eats this, and when it dies it releases it back, only for algae to come back again. If you can take the nutrients out and keep it in control at a level that bacteria get to the nutrients before algae does, then you'll theoretically never have algae again.

(Wendy, I figured you know that though)
