Pylons Tank!

Well, the top of my rockwork likes to fall over ever time I clean the tank, I think/hope it's in a stable place now..

a couple quick updated..
I've lost one of my ricks! oh noes.. I have totally misplaced it and can't find it any where in the tank, maybe it'll show up somewhere..
When I put the new heater in my tank my nem started to mvoe again, last night I saw it creeping towards the overflow so before I went to sleep I killed the power to my pumps.. thankfull he didn't try to cross the overflow until this evening, where luckly I cought him after what couldn't have been more then 5 min stuck in the teeth of the overflow..
Odd note, ever since I touch the nem to ermove it from the over flow the hosting clown hasn't gone near it.. the nem ahsn't moved much since I put it back onto the rocks (other then to settle it's foot itnot he rocks)
Is that normal for a clown to stop hosting after someone touches the nem?

Parents jsut got a HD camera, so I'm gonna clean the glass and steal their camera for a day or two and get some pictures for you guys!

Alright, I know it's been a while so I snateched the HD camera from the parents and took a bunch of pictures.

Here we go!
I am sooo damn happy about this. My second fav rock in the tank is turning purple.

The famale is letting the male hang out in the nem now, the nem itself is still small for both so they'll take turns, but when she's in it he'll only come up to the edge.

Soo thats it really.. I haven't tested my water in a while but I'll get to it very soon, whenever I go to my lfs I take water, they test it and say it's fine.. I've been able to leave my lights on for about 5 hours now.. my last heater was deffinatly off.. it kepy my base temp at 82 degrees, therefor I could only keep the lights on for a couple hours..

Now that the light time has doubled hopefully i'll start to get some good growth.

OH that reminds me! I wanted to ask your thoughts on amphipods and Mini stars.. I got itno this hobby because I saw a nice SW tank and then watched the nano lagoon series by IPSF.com on you tube.

Anyway, they sell those two things and it interest me, that and when my other snails die off I was thinking of getting their strombus grazers..

Any thoughts or ideas?

I think their habitat is in seawead, which I don't have in my tank so i'm not so sure about them..

the reason i bring this up is because it's coming up on 9 months and other then my pistol shrimp I am seeing no activity in my deep sandbed.

I've dealt with Gerald several times through the years, and will deal with him again this fall (when the temps come down) to kick up the biodiversity in my newish refugium (now that I have all the sand in place). Good guy to deal with, and the product is spot on. Other places to check for sandbed innoculation is Inland Aquatics, and GARF.

Yeah, I've talked to him on facebook a few times. I think when I get the monies I'll be buying stuff from him.

heat is still somewhat of an issue, instead ofa base of 82-83 its not 79-80..
In my attempt to cool it down somewhat I've found 4 glass bottles that should fit into the chambers in the back, I can probably do two at a time, but tomorrow I'll start off doing one at a time...

.. in other news.. i've been putting ALOT of thought until upgrading but I am very indecisive..
Should I do a 40b with a ten gal sump.. do I want a sump at all?

There is a 45 gal bow front at my LFS that I am in love with.,, but I don't know if jumping from 28 gal to 45 would satisfy my urge to go bigger..
I've also thought of a 75 and 90 but I am so unsure..
A few things I know for certian
I want a coast to Coast overflow..
I saw one on a youtube series and I love it.
http://www.youtube.com/user/1mkwiet

In the same series I saw some LED lights and they look pretty sexy, plus they might be better on the electric bill.
I think I've given up on growing SPS, I'm happy with my Rics, Zoas, Mushrooms, and frog/hammer.

I might look into some other LPS too.

I would like a fuge because I would like to grow amphipods from ipsf.com in it as well as some other good things..

I of course need a good protein skimmer.. i've seen a few I like..

Lastly new or used? I've seen several videos about resealing tanks, I'm just not a DIY kinda guy.
So many choices,..

Back to my tank.. still getting purple algar growth which I am very happy about.. butMy Frogspawn and Hammy don't seem to be inflating all of the way.. I think I'll move them tomorrow .. maybe they just don't like where they are..

See ya and thanks for reading!

Hi Pylon, everything is looking great. It is so funny to me that you are thinking of buying some strombus snails. I just got some from a Reefer that I know, he gave me about 40 snails and a huge ball of chaeto algae. I've had the snails about a week and they have already laid eggs onto my glass, I'm interested to see how they will do.

As to buying new or used, I say only buy used with caution if you can find a good deal. I bought a used 75g and didn't realize how scratched it was, so check the system out carefully. We are going to give ourselves a year after our 75g is set up to see how it goes, then we are going to upgrade to a larger tank. Now as to what size tank, I've been given the advice to buy the largest tank you have room for if you can afford it. That way you have the space filled and know that there isn't room for anything else, and you'll probably be a lot happier getting what you want the first time. I wish I knew that before I got started.

I'm really enjoying your progress!!! :)

pylon i cant remember if you used live rock or live sand because im too lazy to go back and look lol. but if you did turn your lights on in the middle of the night after they've been off for a few hours. you may already have some amphipods in your tank. i got rock from my old managers tank and it came with many different critters, amphipods being one of them. sometimes i can catch a glimps of one darting back into a hole in my rocks during the day, but they all come out at night with some other critters. try it

Hi thanks for the replies!
First off I used macro rocks, they were dry.. I did go and buy a peice of live rock when I first started the tank, but as some of you may remember I was having alot of salinity problems due to a bad hydrometer. I wouldn't be surprised if everything that was live died during taht time..
I've checked my tank out a couple times during the night and haven't really seen anyworms, but that was maybe a month ago.. I'll check again.

I did use live sand but against.. salinity.. etc etc... ohh and I vacuumed it a few times which I now know is a no no :

Ohhh Also.. I was pondering my heat and it came over my like a lightning strike.. I have yet to clean my pumps.. I'm sure dity pumps is contributing a good amount of heat.. so I may pull out the pumps from my first (broken plastic divider tank) and sub those for a bit while the current running pumps take a vinager bath.

So some bad news...
I have what looks to be red hair algae and red bubble algae.. both are on frqag plugs..
the bubble I could probably scraper off with a blade and do no dmg to the zoas that are on the plug. On he other hand the red hair is in the center of a zoa patch.. I don't know howt o get that off with out dmging it..

I wouldn't sweat it. Just get a few more snails, and a couple of small emerald crabs.

DJ

I'm not worried sbout the bubble too much, I always wanted a emerald anyway. My main concern is the zoas. I haven't seen them open all the way since I noticed the red hair growing on it.

Might be a while before I can get some crabs. my LFS didn't get any in their last shipment and they only make orders every couple of weeks.

Wow this was a fun read from start to finish, I love seeing people's progressions. Emerald crabs are fun, but they do love to move your rock work around! I'm in the process of downsizing from a 65g to a 20g Tall nano (odd move I know, we usually go bigger!). I have two clowns that I have had since wee lil babies and would love to introduce them to a BTA one day! I also love your YWG/Shrimp symbiotic pair.

Thanks for the kind remarks!
I totally wanna go bigger, I'm pretty upset that I missed out on the petco deal this past weekend. the nearest one to me is about two hours away, when I called they were out of 40b's and had 1 55 gal.. I didn't wanna drive that far only for them to be sold out.
